Yes I know for a fact that is true. They said there is no money in it. I think everyone should not go there because of this.

Its hard to believe they just built that huge extension on the hospital..just to turn around and close one of the most important units. I dont know what this town is coming to. Its ridiculous. Wish I could leave here because there is nothing left anymore.

The Pediatric Dept at SOMC is a joke and I wouldn't want my kids to be there anyways. My daughter was seriously injured in an automobile accident with her grandma back in May, and thank God they were life-flighted to Cabell-Huntington from the scene. If they would have taken my daughter to SOMC first, she would not have made it. Sometimes they have no idea what they are doing down there.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THEY ARE NOT CLOSING THE PEDS UNIT. SOMC WILL STILL HAVE AN AREA FOR THOSE CHILDREN WHO NEED TO BE ADMITTED. ONLY IF A PATIENTS CONDITION NEEDS EXTENSIVE CARE THEN THEY WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO A CHILDREN'S FACILITY.

The key word is extensive care. What does this mean? Sure if they require some kind of special surgery or procedure that is not offered here that is one thing. But if your child has the flu, rsv, or some other serious infection, they can only be kept for 23 hours in the emergency room. They will have a peds unit there where they can only stay for 23 hours. After that they must be transfered to a place like Columbus or Cincinnati or sent home. I know this to be true because this came from Dr. Hudson himself. He and other pediatricians are trying desperately to stop this. Go to wsaz.com and click on Ohio news. They have an article as well as a video with all the information.

Drs. Hudson & Keys are no longer affiliated with SOMC because they wanted pediatric nurses in the "pediatric part" of the ER for the safety of the kids. The nurses in the ER are not trained in pediatrics. I think there are one or two nurses who originally worked in pediatrics still there, but I'm not sure they cover the pediatric part now. SOMC has now partnered with Nationwide Children's and that's what Drs. Hudson & Keys wanted from the beginning. It's ashame that their (Drs. Hudson & Keys) request wasn't met in the beginning. After all, the whole point is the safety & care of the kids.

You don't have to travel to Columbus to find a children's hospital. Hoops Family Children's Hospital at Cabell Huntington offers a wide range of services and specialists much closer to home.
