In this week's Portland Leader, I read that they are proposing a raise for the mayor's salary and the Alderman's, as well. I believe the raise they are asking for is a $20,000 per year raise for the mayor ! I'd like to have that kind of raise..LOL LOL LOL

Hello,
I will be relocating to the Portland area in the next week or two. I will be in the area next week to get to 'know my way around'. Any information anyone could give me on apartments, rooms and rentals as well as general information about the area would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer furnished if possible, as I do not want to 'move' my things until my house sells here in GA.
Thanks

On May 1, we had an election. There were three referendums on the ballot. One was an increase for our local sales tax. It was overwhelmingly defeated.
They wanted to raise the sales tax to build a new Civic Center, and improve the airport, and improve the park with a greenway.

There is another link that says that residents, living on the boarder of Portland and Kentucky, tend to shop in Kentucky for lower taxes. I knew that when they proposed raising the taxes that it would be shot down. The problem is not that residents don't want to help. It's that we already almost pay 10% for taxes.

Yes, I think most people do shop in Franklin, KY...where there is no tax on food. Tennessee simply has too high taxes - anyway we can save money, we have to !
Also, the tax hike was proposed to be 70% for the Civic Center, 20% for the parks, and 10% for the airport....all things that are "extras"...nothing essential for the time being...Portland has a LOT of serious needs now..water, sewer, etc..

Portlanders had the opportunity to vote in Liquor by the Drink, which would have contributed, I believe, 25% of that revenue to education....but it failed.

I always loved the little town of Portland when I lived there. Was wondering what your last name was. Sounds like something an old friend of mine would have said.
