every retiring serviceman generally has a protocol right to a formal ceremony of departure. accordingly, most do not require a pass in review by an honor guard, etc. change of command ceremonies normally involve more involved and formal ceremonies. as a taxpayer, i am out raged that several tens of thousands of dollars was spent on this retirement by using these planes. all the hard working enlisted and nco personnel go quietly into the future who arguably deserve the credit for actually getting the job done. i would if in command of a superior unit call the commander who authorized this expenditure and chew his butt royally. the service is not about patting a few officers on the back with a display, supra, but about upholding the honor of all who have served and retired without all the fanfare. this is not in any way meant to impugn the service of the retiree, but to rebuke an apparent lack of good judgment by some commanding officer who forgot to put his brain in gear when planning this event. carry on.
