Portland is too late for a sign. The sign on 66 needs to be before the intersection of rt 151 in East Hampton to allow people to go that way to get to East Haddam to cross the bridge.

Email alerts, Twitter or other modern notification would be nice as well.

All of the retail has moved out of downtown Middletown. All that's left is restaurants and some specialty shops.

The retailers don't care about the lights. If someone wants to stop downtown, they will. Otherwise there's no other options for 5-10 miles.

Getting stuck at the lights does not motivate someone to take a detour through Main Street which will delay your eventual arrival even more.

Why are we still applying bandaids to this long running problem. The problem lies with the intersection under the bridge as well as the bridge itself. Since I was a child (40 plus years ago) this stretch of road has been prone to accidents and tie-ups, there is no intellent reason to have stoplights on a State highway. We need to stop foot dragging and fix this.

Only in DOTland is this done. RT2 Glastonbury another fine example. You are stuck in traffic after Exit 10,off ramp, Westbound. The nearest prewarning sign is at Exit 8, Hebron Ave. approx. 3 miles ahead of you.

I agree with Jim. Portland is too late to have the sign. It needs to be in East Hampton where we have a chance to take alternate routes. The traffic will be backed up long before we ever see the sign at the entrance to the bridge.

The owner of Amato's toy store in Middletown is a major player for not wanting the traffic lights removed on Rt 9. His ideas are as old as he is and the Chamber of Commerce which has a lot of clout, is afraid to go against him! City politics at it's best! As you can tell, that's why you must stop at every light on Main St in Middletown. They are timed that way on purpose. It's all controlled by the same outdated people in Middletown.

Ms. Polanco,

One of the new message signs is being installed on Route 9 in CHESTER, not Cheshire. Please get your facts straight.

Waste is money. Put in a new bridge. That is the only way to solve the problem. Also, if the emergency crew would think a little, I understand they are all important, but they can think, I hope, and maybe not just pull in and block all the traffic, it wouldn't tie up all 4 lanes of the bridge. I think they do it on purpose....it's not necessary.

Not only is it CHESTER, but the DOT did not just willy nilly suggest this because they heard about traffic problems. There was a committee of citizens and elected officials working on a solution for three years.

You are so right. But not their jollies, it's either called power or lack of intellegence because they can't think of the whole situation. I was at an accident on 66 once and there was plenty of room for the ambulance to pull in and do what they had to do, but, no, they pulled in and blocked the whole road. I understand they have important job, but you know what, they should also be cognicent of the whole situation.
