i think this is a great idea considering how much pressure students are under from the college board, etc. but if the standards change in texas, how will it affect college applicants nationwide?

9 times out of 10, grades are subjective. At the end of the day a person is responsible for evaluating your work. Do we really need a weighted grading system?

Its about time... the Texas system has been out of whack for the longest time. However, I do not know what this will do for the state's larger education problems.

Marm, I think that's a really fair point to make. I agree there needs to be some kind of change to the insane way students are pushed right now, but we need to be careful not to take away all levels of accountability for schools on a nationwide basis.

I don't think that this legislation will change anything. Kids who are motivated will be motivated no matter what, and will take harder courses to impress colleges. Kids who were not qualified in the first place, might be more motivated to succeed, however, knowing that they've got almost as good a chance to get the grades of their AP/IB peers.

This could be one solution to the disastrous no child left behind plan.

If we put it in the hands of higher-ups, they might just turn it into a new version of No Child Left Behind

In Oregon they tried to move toward a non-graded system for a while to even things out, a portfolio-based system. No one ever followed through with it. I think that grades are so subjective it is hard to imagine that giving them different weight will make much of a difference.

something has to be done about subjectivity and grades, but i'm not sure if the texas plan is going in the right direction.

All grades are subjective, no matter what you do. That's why the full picture should be taken into account: grades plus test scores, extracurricular activities, an interview, community involvement, etc.

Grades are subjective. However weighted grades help encourage students to take challenging courses instead of stuff like "Introduction to Food" in a bid to preserve their virgin GPAs.

Texas should lower their grades K-12 grade scale by making it like this:

A=90-100% C=70-79% F=0-59%
B=80-89% D=60-69%
