One child dead, another sentenced to jail and one more yet to be sentenced. All the while heroin is just as easy to get today as it was back in June of 2008. Thanks for nothing war on drugs.

i wouldnt go as far as saying he is DIRECTLY responsible. she chose to do heroin at her own free will, while he supplied. your analogy is a bit of a stretch.

Though he got off light, she still chose to take the drugs whereas people killed by drunks have no choice in the matter.

I don't think that you can compare this to drunk driving... As much as it is terrible that someone died, but she was 18, therefore an adult and she made an adult decision to do an illegal drug. I am not saying he isn't at all responsible, but if she wouldn't have got the drugs from, she probably would have got them somewhere else. I feel this sentence is pretty fair.

yet another head for prison instead of a mandatory rehab place--this is why michigan spends more on corrections than on colleges and education in general

Didn't a black kid from Grandville get 20 years for the same thing with his first offence? Was there a difference?

You can't win the war on drugs when the money trafficking brings in buys protection at the very highest levels of government.

These kinds of cases make me glad I'm not a judge. What do you with this "kid"? I think the sentence was probably fair and I hope he can get his life straightened out and be a productive citizen. I don't think locking him up for years and years with hardened criminals is the answer. As for discriminatory sentencing, it does happen and we all know it but it can go both ways and is a topic for another thread.

The girls approached him asking for the drug. People who get killed by drunk drivers do not go out on the road and ask to be killed...what a stupid arse thing to say.

omg some people are stupid...

Yeah its a light sentence for a drug dealer, but at the same time, she chose to take the drugs, so she isnt so innocent... she is just as responsible for her own death as that boy is.

OMG, I am not sure what makes me more nauseous, the judge giving this confessed HEROIN dealer 1 year in jail, or you hanky stomping liberals who think that is all he deserves.

Yes he did. This case gives him grounds for appeal on harsh sentencing.

No. Eugene Atkins had a prior felony drug conviction. 10 people testified in court that he dealt to young people in the area. He was offered two plea deals, and extensively warned that if he didn't accept one of them, he was facing mandatory life in prison. He insisted on going to trial and was found guilty. He later appealed and the original sentence was upheld.

I meant, YES, there WAS a difference. NO, it wasn't his first offense.

There were two different incidents in Grandville. Kevin Obi dealt to Nora Lares and she died. Eugene Atkins dealt to Matt McKinney and he died as well.
