My daugther was out this evening and someone sitting near her received a phone call from someone involved with either medical or police in Portage - telling her that an 8th grader at Willowcreed Jr. High committed suicide at 8:30p this evening. If this is true how horrible and tragic. My kids are in 8th and 6th at Willowcreek and I am very concerned. Anyone hear anything about this?

From what I understand there are two kids from Portage that committed suicide yesterday. Very sad day indeed for this town. The other boy was a student at PHS. My deepest sympothies to both families. May your loved ones find peace.

Yes, there was a student that commited suicide at Willowcreek MS, it is my sons good friend and it is very upsetting. So far I haven't gotten much info about services being held. This is so sad for my family and I still can't believe the boy that has been to my house is now gone. But from what I understand the school has people that will talk to parents and students if they need it.

I work with children this age at my job at a mental health facilty everyday, who know's what these children might of been going through on a day to day basis. Us as parent's or just a mentor in their lives need to be there for our children or other children and listen to them and be supportive of them and let them know that they are loved and cared for. Sometime's knowing that someone is there for them mean's so much to them...We need to let them know that there is hope and that wanting to take their lives is not the only way out for them....

In the few days since I have posted this I did find out all the information. Was completely shocked to find out about Anthony the 2nd boy. These are two terrible tragedies for their families and for them, their young lives lost. Far too young to take such drastic measures. My kids went to school with Quentin and to see his myspace page I am just completely stunned that this poor child walked around with slashes on his wrists and gouging cuts and no one noticed this or maybe they did and didn't try to seek help. What's really frightening is the rate of these kids these days and "cutting". I think it's bad enough that the schools should enforce something once a week to make the kids show their arms or take their shirts off or something to prove they aren't cutting and if they are then they should be sent for mandatory counseling by professionals. This boy posted the pics on his myspace page , wrote of his suicide intentions.. it's just tragic. Now the girlfriend that he said he was doing it over is threatening suicide - who knows how bad that poor little girl is affected. I feel bad for everyone involved. It's scary and yes all parents, all adults need to band together to protect these kids even if they are stubborn and hard headed. The suicide rate amoung young people is off the charts. This same instance happened in Hammond last October. 2 kids over a break up. Really, really sad.

Sad way to get parents & schools to pay attention. But they look the otherway till a tragedy happens. My kids are in Willowcreek and if I could give them a grade...well it wouldn't be a good one. Mike Berta.....you gots to go!!!!

Tragedy forsure! What these kids are seeing as a way out, infact is not. There is an eternity and that is wht is most freightning! My son is a 7th grader at WMS and knew both Quentin and his girlfriend Trinity. My heart aches at what these families must be going through. The focus needs to be on her now and help 247 must surround her if she is feeling the same anxiety that Quentin did. IF all these signs were there for Quentin, then "everyone" looked the other way! Are you kidding, Portage Mom to say Mike Berta's gotta go,or even blame the school? It is us as parents, our primary job to teach and counsel our children, then the school reinforces that! There is no one to blame here but neglect by "everyone" who saw the signs and ignored them!

Yeah they don't usually put things like this in the paper out of respect. If it is ture God Forbid I pary the family or famlies of the victims get through this in the best possible way.
