Fallsburg, N.Y.)-- The New York State Corrections Office in Albany has confirmed that serial killer Arthur Shawcross, 63, has died.

Officials said he complained of a pain in his leg Monday afternoon. He was taken to the Albany Medical Center, where he went into cardiac arrest and died at 9:50 p.m.

Shawcross, also known as the “Genesee River” serial killer, was convicted of murdering 11 victims, from 1988 to 1990.

Many, but not all, of the victims were prostitutes; all but one was from Monroe County. Most of the victims were found near or in the Genesee River.

Patricia Ives, 25
Frances Brown, 22
June Cicero, 34
Darlene Trippi, 32
Anna Marie Steffen, 28
Dorothy Blackburn, 27
Kimberly Logan
June Stotts, 30
Marie Welch, 22
Elizabeth Gibson
Dorothy Keller, 59
In his Monroe County trial, Shawcross pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. But the defense did not convince the jury, and he was convicted in 1991 and sentenced to 250 years in prison.

He pleaded guilty to murder in a subsequent trial for the victim from Wayne County.

In 1972, he was convicted of killing and sexually assaulting two children in the Watertown area—10-year-old Jack Owen Blake and eight-year-old Karen Ann Hill.

He was released after serving 15 years of a 25-year plea bargained sentence in March 1987. After being rejected by many communities, he eventually settled in Rochester.

The first victim was murdered in March 1988.

Since his last conviction, he was in the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, N.Y.

The piece of shit should have died years ago - those women had their lives taken, yet he was able to live to age 63 all at the expense of us tax payers. Should have fried him!!

I actually just saw this same one on the lowville forum. My friend Arnold from Watertown is actually with Arthurs ex wife. He took in her and the kids years ago after Arthur was tried and convicted. I had a quite a few brief conversations with him about Aurthur, and he said that she never suspected that he did any of those things and she didn't believe that he did until the proof and evidence was there. Evidently in his personal life he was a good person (which we know it was a show). I really enjoyed my talks with Arnold about those things. Aurthurs wife and children are very happy where they are, and that's a good thing

I have watched this story, investigation on T.V., I have to say that it made my skin crawl. He was a very disturbed man. It really makes a parent or person realize that this stuff happens and we need to be careful and alert!!!

Yeah, no kidding!!! I also saw him on TV, on HBO I think it was, in an interview...I don't think anyone is going to miss him. God bless his family, and his victims families.

In fact, I knew most of them. tell you truthfully
some of these girls were absolute sweethearts, i loved Darlene. and even to this day, i grieve over them and their horrible end.

I'm sorry to hear that you were friends with those people. What a terrible loss for no apparent reason. I hope that you have since healed from it.
