Mystery over grave of an English man in Palacios graveyard - help!

Hi - can anyone shed any light over the grave of this Sunderland man at Palacios graveyard?
The grave is marked:
Resting place of George Brown
Born Sunderland, England
Born September 1, 1832
Death May 31, 1909
I don't suppose anyone out there knows how or why George died in Palacios - 5,000 miles from home in 1909. Research suggests he was a mariner, but at 79 he was quite old to still be sailing the world at that time.
Any help appreciated!
