A 24-year-old Sinton High School coach and former professional baseball player was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of having an improper sexual relationship with a female student.

Omar Jesus Gutierrez turned himself in to San Patricio County authorities shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday on a second-degree felony charge of improper relationship between an educator and student, San Patricio County Chief Deputy Oscar Rivera said. He was released from jail after posting $30,000 bail.

Sinton ISD Superintendent Steve Van Matre said he learned Monday that Gutierrez, a first-year special education teacher and freshman football coach, was accused of an improper relationship with a 16-year-old student. After a brief investigation Monday, the superintendent suspended Gutierrez with pay and called Sinton police.

“Mr. Gutierrez resigned Tuesday,” Van Matre said.

Van Matre and Sinton Police Lt. Eric Blanchard would not say who alerted the school to the relationship.

The girl told Sinton investigators that she had sex with Gutierrez on at least three occasions between Dec. 29 and Jan. 8, according to an arrest affidavit signed by Justice of the Peace Yolanda Guerrero.

Investigators searched Gutierrez’s home Tuesday and found evidence that supported the girl’s claim, according to the affidavit.

Blanchard would not say what evidence was collected.

Gutierrez helped lead the Sinton Pirates to a Class 3A state baseball title in 2002, and finished his high school career as a first baseman and No. 3 pitcher the following season. He graduated in 2003.

Gutierrez did not play baseball immediately after high school, but was a pitcher at Austin’s Huston-Tillotson College in 2006. After that season, Gutierrez landed at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

While there, he was a standout player for the Islanders, according to the team’s Web site. He earned a degree from the university in 2008 before he was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 29th-round of the Major League Baseball 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

He pitched for the Padres’ Class A team in the summer of 2008, but did not play professional baseball last season.

He took the teaching and coaching position in Sinton at the start of the school year, Van Matre said.
