And he was riding a dirt bike on railroad tracks because....? I live near a freight train/MARC track, and it's astounding how many people seem to think that the railroad tracks are their own personal exercise sites! Joggers, walkers, you name it. And, surprisingly, some of those freight trains can be on top of you before you know it. Even if they're going very slow, it can still take up to 1/4 of a mile to come to a stop from the time the engineer applies the brakes. Train tracks are for trains, not people!

Just {FYI}, The man hit by the train grew up there. He,his friends, and most people have used those tracks,as a short cut,for years and years. In all that time, this was the first time that he has seen a train. One time in 20 years, good odds,I'd say! Also, he saw the train comming, moved the bike,AND,himself off the tracks.
He was hit by the {cow spreader}on the front of the engine. That is what hit him and through him 30 ft. into the river.Papers,in the haste of deadlines, sometimes aren't aware of all the facts!
And you commented, without all the facts,because....? His father-in-law...

John Wallace ...

What's your point? He had no business being anywhere on or near the train tracks. Bear in mind that regarldess of how long your family and generation have used the train tracks for recreational purposes, it is private property and not designed or intended for public use. In effect, your son-in-law was trespassing, not to mention being a complete idiot for placing himself near the vicinity of a moving train. RIP.

First time in 20 years he sees a train on those tracks? Was he in a coma for nineteen and a half years?

So he sees the train coming, moves out of the way and still gets hit by the train? It must have been one of those retractable cow spreaders with a 50 foot wide span that the engineer can activate just for kicks when he wants to knock someone into the river.

Natural selection is alive and well, and in the future we will be a race with uncanny abilities to avoid slow moving freight trains.

First off he had nowhere to go when he saw train. There was a rock wall on on side and cliff on other. He went to jump off cliff and train clipped him. For the RIP hes alive. Everyone walks on those tracks even though they shouldnt. I have seen kids doing it all the time. You guys all want to bad mouth him but everyone makes mistakes. He is a husband and father of two now. If it was your loved one I bet you wouldnt say the same as you are now. Dont always go by the articles you read. You all are very rude and inconsiderate.

People really need to get the facts. My brother tried NOT to outrun the train, but to get the bike off of the train tracks before the train could get to him..he tried to move out of the way, the bike wheel got stuck in the track as he was trying to move..Let's see here..would you try to jump off a rock ledge?? you can't...he couldn't climb it, and had he stayed there, he would have been smooshed to death. The only reason he got hit, was he was being stubborn and trying to save his dirtbike.. he was gonna try to push the dirt bike off the other side of the cliff and then jump, but everything happened so fast... if you see a train coming at you, a million things are going to go through your mind at once people..not only to get out of the way, before you get hit, but to jump off a cliff knowing there is the river at the bottom, and rocks? he knew he could have died. People really should get ALL the facts before they comment on something, they don't know ALL the details too. Yes my brother shouldn't have been on those tracks to begin with, but how many times have you guys done something stupid you shouldn't have done? really. give my brother a break people. I'm thanking God he made it through this ordeal alive..many others didn't have that same fate while meeting up with a train.
