I guess reading all the reviews I will now buy a home in Port Charlotte. Thanks for the info. Does anyone no where to 4 wheel in North Port? I heard that was the place to go for 4 wheeling.

Other questions Is there a lot of crime in North Port or Port Charlotte? Is there gangs there? And where is the closest beach in that area that you can swim in the water? Any info. would be great, thanks

I lived in North Port for nine years, I live in Venice now, it was quiet. I never expierenced any crime while living there. The closest beaches are about 25 minutes away. You can either go to Englewood Beach or Venice beach, they're about the same distance. The nicest beach by far is Siesta Key in Sarasota, it's about 45 minutes away. I can't tell you much about 4 wheeling, because I have never done it. North Port is very large with a alot of open space in certain spots, so you should be able to find a spot to 4 wheel.

I would also rent a house or an apartment before you buy to see how you like it. The area was hit hard after the housing bubble, and there are a lot of foreclosures in the area. Selling a house in the area isn't easy because there are still so many foreclosures. Prices are cheap, and they won't be going up drastically anytime soon, so try before you buy.

We have found North Port to be a very nice place to live. We found a great bargain on a home in the Jockey Club. I have heard that at one time they were very picky in this addition and had old gals with clip boards coming around your home to complain about petty things. People who have lived here for years told me that was prety true at one time but not now. We have a nice communtiy center with a very nice pool as well as other offerings. I have had great realations with the people on the block. I like the area because it is close to the stores as well as just a short drive to Port Charlotte . There is a very nice fairly new dog park a few blocks from us. Most people keep thrir homes and yards nice. although a deeded community (not gated) people are friendly and there are older as well as younger people with families. They have just opened a new shopping area with a new Publix as well as Dollar Tree, Hobby Lobby, Beals, and more. Of corse there is Wal Mart, Dollar General, and many others as well. In land enough to be not too close to the water but not a long drive to the beaches. It is a good time to buy because prices are starting to go back up. There are still some great bargains in the city. North Port has much wide open privicy like areas and is the largest land area in the county. It is growing fast. We have had no crime problem in our area of anything major. North Port has a lot to offer. There are lots of parks, churches and the high school is beautiful. It is worth taking a drive around and looking. I don't think there is anyplace anywhere that is perfect but we could have never found such a nice home for our price elsewhere. Glad we came.

Man charged with sexual assault:
NORTH PORT — North Port Police arrested a man last Thursday after he allegedly sexually assaulted a female family member.
According to an NPPD report, officers were called to an Alam Avenue home just after 5 p.m. on May 3 after the 46-year-old victim called 911. Police arrived at the house and heard a woman yelling. They opened the door and found Rashuan Cooper, 18, standing over the victim, who was naked and curled up in a chair, according to the report. It appeared that Cooper, who was also naked and had his arms stretched out, was trying to grab the victim. Officers ordered Cooper to the ground several times, the report states, but he just stood there and looked at the police. The report says officers took hold of his arms but Cooper attempted to pull away.

So I hope this puts an end to you your line of BS.

There never has been any large good paying jobs here, either in good times or bad. So how can jobs come back if there were none to begin with. We have one of the highest unemployment rates in SW Florida.
80% of the working population lucky to have a job has to work outside of the city due to the lack of jobs period. Every single post telling how much there is to do here post how close every thing is to them. All of which are in another city, not here.
Here is what we have; box stores, gas stations and fast food.
The city services are absolutely horrible, and show no sign of improving period.
You have a police department that is in constant turmoil. Just a year ago a PD dispatcher was fired for negligence, the at the sametime a rookie with less then a year on the department was suspended for starting a fight at a Tampa coutry bar.
Shortly before that an officer quit before he was fired for coming to work while under the influence of a narcotic. Then an officer was suspended for 3 months for starting a fight at a North Port Bar and grill. Before that an officer quit before he could be fired for show a squad car video to several people of two girls in its backseat flashing their breast. Last there are the male and female officers who were suspended for fraternizing. The male officer being demonted as well.
While all of this has been going on at the department, just this year in the last 7 or 8 months we have had half a dozen killings, shootings, stabbings, and general increase in crime.
Then we have the NPFD. A Lt. was fired for dereliction of duty and a ladderman for covering it up is outrageous at best.
Then there was the assistant chief who quit from the NPFD before he could be fired for DUI while driving one of the NPFD vehciles.
All of the above happened in the last year.
You have a waste management department that can not keep more then half the fleet of vehicle in working order at any one time. City water and sewage is one of the highest in the state for a city our size.
Next lets talk about how NP has one of the largest forcloser rates in the state.
This city has been my home for thrity years, not just half a dozen as those who think things are great here.
The city has had it's ups and downs for sure, however it has been in the downs for over 15 years now and not getting better.
We may have more of this and that but quantity does not mean quality by any means.
There are no decent restaurants, unless your idea of gourmet is the slop house "The Stuff a Belly Restaurant".
There are no pastures and greenspace. Just single family home lots that have become over grown over the years.
Unless you plan on boating through weed and muck infested shallow canals, there is really no place to do such in the city.
The closest beach access that is free is more then 20 minutes away and was closed three different times just a few months ago do to pollution caused by(man-made)sources for fecal coliform.
There are no large employable businesses in town, and absolutely no manufacturing jobs at all. Just underpaying box stores and fast food jobs.
The city has one of the states highest forecloser rates per capita in the state.
Oh one other thing! The Toledo blade ER is just that, an ER. There are no beds at all for over night stay. If you need to do such you are shipped out to Sarasota Memorial via the North Port EMS at substantial charge to most insurance co-pay.

In the last year alone 10% of the department has been either suspended of fired.
The NPFD has no better record either.
It took all most fifteen years after I moved here in 1980 before the city would okey its first fast food restaurant (McDonalds). The main reason the city commis. gave over and over was they did not want a place for teens to congregate and cause trouble.
At any one time the waste managements fleet has at best lest then half it's fleet in working operation at any one time. The one man garbage pick-up vehicles are the biggest drain on the vehicle maintenance budget for the entire city.
Enough said, but much more can be added.

North Port at budget breaking point
2012: With reserves at a critical low, city will have to cut more or raise taxes

NORTH PORT - Like a family that spent down its savings to make ends meet through the Great Recession, North Port is facing the fact that the city is going broke.
Even with seven-plus months remaining in the current budget year, city staffers are starting to make lists of possible spending reductions, including to personnel, employee wages and benefits. Pressure is mounting to raise taxes.
In a workshop Wednesday to prepare for the 2012 city budget, the City Commission acknowledged that years of spending down city reserves must come to an end, as North Port's general fund savings will have dwindled to less than $5 million by the end of the year. This is not enough liquidity for a city that spends $117 million annually.
"As we try to react and adapt to things in the budgetary year, how can we react to that if we've totally planned to use everything we've got?" asked Fire Chief Bill Taaffe.
North Port is using about $4 million from its reserves to balance the current budget, meaning that it likely faces a multimillion-dollar budget hole going into next year, even if property values stop declining.
Arguably the worst-hit city in the region as the recession subsides, North Port has lost more than half of its taxable value, some $3 billion in recent years, while holding the line on taxes and failing to significantly cut spending.
This has drained North Port's once-plentiful reserves of $27 million down to a projected $4.7 million.
"We've actually been told that we're wasting money and spending money left and right when in actuality we spent it to keep services the same as citizens wanted and to keep taxes the same as citizens wanted," said Commissioner Mike Treubert of spending trends that have threatened North Port's credit rating.
More than 40 percent of the city budget goes toward personnel costs, making layoffs likely if North Port is to bring spending and revenue in line and still not raise taxes.
"It will have to be cuts across all departments," said Commissioner Tom Jones of a worst-case-scenario next year, "including police, including fire."
North Port's 2012 budget year begins Oct. 1. Wednesday's City Commission workshop was the first step in formulating North Port's spending plans

Real estate agents are famous for putting a listing in the best possible light to close a sale. On Thursday, the industry's national trade association confirmed that its monthly data have been painting a rosier picture of the pace of home sales since 2007.
As msnbc.com reported in March, the National Association of Realtors has been overstating the pace of existing home sales by more than 16 percent. The trade group now says just 17.7 million existing homes were sold from 2007 to 2010, not the 20.6 million it originally reported. The NAR made no changes to its data on home prices.
In its announcement of the downward revisions, the trade group sought to downplay the impact of "re-benchmarking" the data lower.
“From a consumer’s perspective, only the local market information matters and there are no changes to local multiple listing service data or local supply-and-demand balance, or to local home prices,” NAR economist Lawrence Yun said in a release explaining the revisions.
The NAR's monthly sales data is a critical input for a host of widely-watched forecasts generated by public and private economists - from Wall Street to the Federal Reserve. Investors make big bets based on the data. Debates on government policy, from the White House to Capitol Hill, rely on this barometer of the health of the housing industry, a critical pillar of the U.S economy.

I don't which North Port some of these folks are speaking of, must be Northport, Alabama. I frequently visit my best friend in Port North. I have exprienced nothing but friendly, courtesous, and respectful adults and kids in North Port. And all I do there is shop and eat out. Don't know about past local governments, but the present local government is responsible, business-like, responsive to to its constituents, and they are on the move. Alot of strategic planning and action steps towards continuing infrastructure & development. Even with the recent economic downturn, this small city has a budget of $111 million, more than some affluent small cities in Florida. Great sense of community. True the construction trade went a little nuts. I think that some people are meant for the big city life. The big city where there are plenty of drugs, hard core gangs, drive-bys, liquor, night clubs, strips clubs, predators to keep everyone busy on how to avoid it. I love it there and if you have small kids, it seems to be a great place to raise children. Crime rate there has gone up, because anywhere where there is growth, the crime goes up and even still it is 41% lower than in the State of Florida overall. If you want to truly know a city look at their budget, their debt, and reserves... you'll find that North Port is not bad at all compared to many other places in Florida even the country considering the economy.

Strange how you do not live here, yet you make a statement about how great the city is by just visiting a friend.
You especialy crow about how great the new city admin is.
Yet you say nothing about one of its members who has been found to have violated almost a dozen campaign laws.
The same official has refused to talk to anyone except through email.
This same offical and the other newly elected official refused to participate in any debates prior to the election.

You talk about not knowing about past admin at all. Well the current one has not been here for five months.
How many times have you visited North Port Florida? Unless you visit everyday and have attended all the city comms. meetings how can you make a statement about how great the current admin is?
Especialy when you state that all you do is shop and eat out here!!!!
You have a three hour drive from where you live in Hialeah to North Port. I find it very unlikely that you have visited here everyweek for the past four months.
Then again, if I lived in that crime ridden, economically depressed part of Broward Co. I would think of leaving it as much as possible.

You then go on to say "If you want to truly know a city look at their budget, their debt, and reserves... you'll find that North Port is not bad at all compared to many other places in Florida even the country considering the economy."

You do not say compared to cities it size or what. Just a wide swiping generalization.
You make the same non comparative generalization statement about the crime rate.
Once again how do you know how good the cities finances and crime rate are if all you do is shop and eat here, when you just visit?

It is more then likely that you are a friend or relative of one of the city admins, posting some of their talking points.

I agree. How is it that someone knows every detail of the current run admin of the City of North Port that has held office for less then 5 months.
Yet knows nothing of the previous one.

It is nothing more then a spam post by the current office holders who are drawing the ire of the public.

The Warm Mineral Springs debacle.
A police department that is in disarray.
A city commissioner under investigation by the state for numerous campaign violations.

In truth, this admin is the worst since old Marj Gentle was mayor and ran the city from the late 70's till the late 80's.

Worst in the way of not listening to the public and doing as they wish.
Rather the admin is acting for themselves.

You will love N.P. I've been here for 7 yrs. and it;s such a pretty place. Over at the Estates
if you drive around those roads, you see deer and a lot of wildlife. There's also a nice park. Also if you read the newspaper there's always free things to do and the Sarasota beaches are just a 30 min. drive and very little traffic in the summer. Good luck and please post after you get settled.

Drugs are everywhere and crime is everywhere! People that are from Yale to jail, if anything after reading all the police report s that the gentlemen here has posted I am convinced new port is not a rough town for the price that the houses sell and rent for. And the fact there is not a Starbucks on every corner does not upset me. A movie theatre would be nice though. To anyone complaining I suggest you figure out how to bring some quality to the area instead of simply complaining just to get your anger out. Punching bags are better for that. Maybe start some clean and sober projects for kids or start aa and na meetings. Talk to your state delegates and see what you can do to be part of the solution instead of whining about the problem .

Why should one not talk to the local city commission for a solution?
Oh wait!!!!! Three of the five elected officials refuse to listen the citizens of North Port. Instead they follow their own agenda.

Such agendas as closing Warm Mineral Springs because things were not to their liking. Even though the vast majortiy of citizens wanted it kept as it was.

So, buy all means, please contact out areas state senator Nancy C. Detert who is from Venice.

You know!! Nancy Detert who has stated in private conversation that she could two sh*its less about the city of North Port.

Now for the other poster who stated that "North Port is pretty."

A Coral Snake is pretty too, but deadly as h*ll. The Estates area is deadly as h*ll as well.
You never know when some jackass is going ride his/her galloping horse out of a blind driveway infront of your car.

Then there is the same jackasses vicious dog that is aloud to run loose that chases and tries to bite you.
When the owner is confronted, they tell you it is a an ag community and they do not need to confine their dog.
Lastly let one not forget the same jackass who feels that he/she has to fire their numerous assault rifles in the area.

Who's rounds fly several thousand feet down the road.
Yes sir, the estates is just like a Coral Snake. Pretty and dangerous as h*ll.
