I came to Port Angeles in 1955. At that time, this city was a very good place to raise children.

Now, 51 yrs later, it is still a good place to raise children.

PA is a beautiful little town. We have everything..the mountains, the water and good people.

Ok, ok, there are some not so nice people here too, but you'll find that everywhere.

I work at the welfare office in PA. I see ALL kinds of people. Yes, many are moving here from California. What does that tell you? It tells me that like my mother and father 51 yrs ago those moving here are looking for a peaceful, beautiful place to live..to get out of the rat-race of California.

I love Port Angeles. And I'll tell you this: for every one trouble making person that comes in to the office (welfare) there are a hundred nice folk who are just down on their luck and need a hand up.

Unfortunately, Port Angeles is a city who has a city council that is behind the times.Cronyism is their way of life. They are running their own agenda's & not the wishes of the people.
While Sequim is prospering & growing,
Port Angeles (The Larger City for now at least)is dieing on the vine! Port Angeles is plaqued with politics at it's worst. From the city attorneys office, the city council,the auditor, etc. etc.We are faced with low-income families,no affordable housing,lack of employment,high taxes,street people,drugs, etc.{But it is a beautiful place}

Port Angeles is a great place. But, Port Angeles needs a NEW CITY COUNCIL.Throw the bums out on their butts & get some honest folks in. Things might just improve.....

I live in Port Angeles in the early 80's and to this day still remeber the peacefulness I felt and good memories that little town brought. No we had no Wal-Mart or big shopping malls, not much retail of any kind but that is where I realized that God had given us much more. A beautiful earth to enjoy. All we needed was a little gas and fee time and imagination and we were in heaven. Enjoy what you have. we can find beauty anywhere if we are willing to open our hearts.

Does your mother know you use the computer for this? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Fed Up Citizen -

There are some very nice affordable housing homes (60K per) going up near Lauridson and Lopez. Nicer than some of the regular homes. There are also LOTS of underused senior low income apartments. Should the whole town be dedicated to catering to the poor and homeless? As far as I can tell there are plenty of jobs with all sorts of pay ranges as well. Sounds like you just like to complain. If you do not like the people running the show, run for office.

NANC -

Port Angeles good and bad from the perspective of someone who has lived here around 4 years:

Good:
1)Child and family oriented with strong music program
2)Absolutely beautiful place to live (nestled between Strait and mountains)
3)Lots of nature oriented, arts oriented things to do
4)Some opportunity for work relative to size
5)If you sail, this is heaven.
6)Gardeners dream
7)Children seem relitively untouched by rampant consumerism and unadulterated greed.

Bad:
1)Fishing restrictions and the amount of fish available... horrifying.
2)SOME who have lived here their whole lives can be outwardly unaccepting of newcomers. Especially from CA (Luckily I am not from CA). Some are nice. Maybe 60/40.
3)If you cannot find it at Swains or Walmart, you probably have to go to Silverdale.
4)The people who run this town and the chamber of commerce folks are stuck in the 50's and are highly resistant to change (see #2). The downtown business owners do not want any new business to come in and will eventually, I think, run our pretty town into oblivion. Same goes for some of the kooks running the town.

So, ignore the politics, ignore weird lifers and shazam! a lovely place to live emerges!

I would gladly welcome a woman who admonishes an internet brat.

I have moved to Port Angeles, from Olympia, WA in January 2006. I have lived in Europe, Canada and US. After all the moving in my life, I have finally found a perfect place to live. Hope never to move out of this town.

Good:
1) Can snowboard, swim in the ocean, and go fishing in of the lakes or mighty rivers on the same day (I used to live in Vancouver BC. Port Angeles is better/smaller version of the highly polluted and crime infected city up north).
2) Do not have to have winter clothes (used to live in Edmonton, Alberta and Detroit, MI -> too cold)
3) Lack of heat waves, temperatures in August will rarely raise above 85F.
4) Do not have to live 6 feet from your neighbor. Suburbia is yet unknown here.

> 4) see above from PA Gal

Bad:
All people from the heat stressed south will probably move here within next decade due to Too Perfect climate.
Sometimes I hope it would rain more in PA :)

I would say Port Angeles has its ups and downs..when my family moved here, it seemed like a nice town but once you live here it sucks! Every year the amount of kids going to school is dropping cause of lack of jobs. City Council sucks here and is stuck in past times. There is no night life, nothing for kids to do. I would not recommend for kids or families because there is a high chance they will start abusing drugs i have lost many friends cause of it. The Music Program is really good here, and that is one thing i like here. Sports is alright..WE rarly go to state..Its rain here about 10 out of 12 months. It goes over 75 maybe for 5 days max in a year. It snows in spring break.. i hate it here. Schools are also suffering due to the admin. they waste a lot of money of other stuff instead of spending it on the children. WE NEED MORE JOBS HERE AND A CITY COUNCIL!! IF THAT HAPPENS THIS CITY WILL BE AGAIN LIKE THE OLD PORT ANGELES WHERE EVERYTHIGN WAS NICE AND WE WERE THE BEST HIGH SCHOOL EVER I WANT THAT TO HAPPEN PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE A CHANGE!WE NEED TO GET THE DRUG DEALERS OUT OF HERE! THEY PUT THE CRAPIEST PPL OUT OF JAILS HERE> WE NEED TO CHANGE THIS JOIN ME IN THE ACT TO BRINGING PORT ANGELES BACK TO WHAT IT WAS LIKE BEFORE THE METH ADDICTS CAME

No way did you just say you hope it would rain more here. Obviously you dont have a normal life here. For us who live here, we are tired of the irregular weather. Its the most random town with weather ever! The weather is death

I raised my family in Sequim and now live in Port Angeles, and this area is one of the best places in the country to live. I will say that some of the comments about backwardness have some merit, and Port Angeles should be much further ahead along in its economic development than it is. But anyone who has lived in a small town knows that this is the way it often happens. Personally and professionally (I'm retired as a real estate attorney and now I own a real estate brokerage), I'm working hard to help develop a vision for Port Angeles among businessmen, and to help people moving into the area.

If you're outside the area, and you want specific information about the real estate market or anything, email me, and if I can email helpful info to you, I certainly will.

I've written about these issues on my local blog and literally 100's of other articles about the local real estate market and news, and you're welcome to read and comment on my blog. If you want to see it, go to http://PortAngelesRealEstateNews.com
