I think it is time for a new EMA director,I listened to the scanner during this flood we had as well as helped rescue some of the flood victims.I only heard Rick Sliger talking on the radio a couple of times,I never saw him at any scene what so ever.Nor did I hear them instructing any of his people to go stage or help anywhere.I also heard the night they was opening the shelter he went home around 5 pm thinking he had put his day in.Then he had the nerve to call the head of the mshp and complained that the patrol was not advising him or keeping him abreast of the conditions.I thank God for our county fire department,Sheriff department, mshp, and coast guard who actually got in there and got their hands dirty. We are very lucky to have leaders that can get in there and make things happen.

I tell you what else is sad I was at the shelter the other day helping out when some of the big wigs came in. And its funny how they did'nt bother to take time to talk to any of the victims until after the news camera's showed up the boom all of a sudden the became Ghandi.

Hats off to Bob Fredwell and the Butler county fire department. Those guys are real heros. They worked all through the emergency with little or no sleep. That is real devotion to the citizens. As far as the EMA, They were only sent to Piedmont to help for a couple of hours and then went home. Sliger never lifted a finger to do anything. What a joke he has turned out to be. And then to have the gall to file for the sheriff's race only to have to find out that he can't file for a political office if he is paid by the government. Sliger told everyone the he was NOT going to run and was lying all the time. The EMA volunteers are great but the present director need to go....

Nothing at all is wrong with giving someone credit. But the post wasn't intended to give credit... it was a jab at Sliger. I just get so sick of people doing that on this forum.

I also think it's lame to sign on with a diffrent name each time to look like you're more than one person.

Enough with the name bashing if you aren't going to add your name to it. People are tired of it and don't believe the shit people say on here anyway.

The few things you said to give credit were soon followed by bashing of Sliger. Thus, showing your true intentions for the post. Politcal BS. I wish the elections were over already.

Didn't say he was or wasn't doing fine. My point was that this post was to bash Sliger.

Rick Sliger needs to go back where he came from. Prior to him becoming the Director of EMA they had a bunch of different programs going on, and were involved in almost everything that went on in the county. The previous director could put out a request and get 20 people in a matter of minute. Rick Sliger puts out a request and he is lucky to get 5 peoplele. Go figure. I wish the commissioners would open their eyes up and see what they did to the Butler County Emergency Management when they hired Rick Sliger.

All rock throwing aside i think we should look at the good side of things. this flood was something rare and unexpected and our emergency crews worked hard and very long hours trying to do the best that they could to help people out. i know state road dept. workers that worked 30= hours without going home. i seen state, county and city police officers and fire dept. people that also worked long hours soaking wet and cold but always helping and very patient when dealing with people. I think we should be thanking them for what they done and just remember this was an act of nature no one here could have stopped it.

I work with a man who was out for almost 2 days with no sleep as part of the EMA. He worked very hard for this community and the surrounding communities. To insinuate he didn't is simply an insult and I pray he doesn't read this post. Simply because you didn't hear him on the scanner constantly does not mean he wasn't dealing with issues or situations as was needed. You HEARD he went home at 5pm, but you don't know that he did. For all you know he could've simply went to a different area than the person you 'heard' it from was at. Don't assume. Also, if you were so diligently listening for him on the scanner then you weren't out in the forray assisting you were instead sitting in your nice warm DRY home. So perhaps, until you are a part of the solution, you should stop being the problem.

I for one do not think that the government in Butler County know how to handle any situation, especially one as important as this one. The flooding recently has been treated as a wait and see what happens matter. In cases where there were reports of the levees being "weak" as stated by a member of the Sheriffs Department, no one was given a warning or asked to evacuate their homes. My family has been affected by this flood, they were told by the City of Poplar Bluff that they did not need to evacuate or get their belongings out, now they are sifting through what is left of the items they had in their home. A simple warning or heads up could have prevented this. My extended family has been affected as well. I called the Sheriffs Department last night due to the fact that I had heard there was a levee near Swift Ditch in Qulin that might break. When I called, the responder stated that the levee was "weak" but that there were no evactuations or warnings going out. But he stated that it was "a good idea to go ahead and pack what you can and get out". This morning, the water is up to the steps on the house, not yet inside, but closing in slowly and surely. All this could have been prevented had the Sherrifs Department or local government officials given a fair warning as to the weakened state of the levee.

But what do I know, I just see what happens when they dont ....

I live on CR 605 and i repeatedly tried to contact the EMA over and over again through the whole ordeal only to get passed through the channels i finally was given Rick Sliger personal cell phone number only to get his voice mail. from there I only got voice mail and answering machines.I feel like the EMA tried to do their job but the manager needs to be replaced. He let the people of Butler County down and they deserve someone who is willing to work through the night if needed. Not some jerk who thinks hes better then everyone else in the County. I think the flood showed how the community pulled together without the directors help. We were in the car in Poplar Bluff when we heard the call for help in Coon Island. Around 12 maybe 1 the point is we made it all the way to nellyville got our family out of there and back to poplar bluff before we passed any of the responders a good hour and a half latr. We called the county and they told the levy had broke and they were having problems contacting Rick Sliger. I tried over 30 times to contact them and never once got through only answer machines. The only info we got was from the sheriffs office and friends within. We should have people out there collecting stuff for victums that need the basics ike drinking water and cloths and easter stuff for their children and when you call to volunter your help and ask what can be done they flat tell you they need no help or volunteers at this time. I bet the family that does not have a Easter Basket for their Child In the Morning wishes that someone would of helped and gathered stuff. I tried and got turned away. But i guarantee you I will be at the next County meeting and I will let them know what I think.

Any thing that you would like to donate need's to be taken to the Rescue Mission next door to the Coliseum. They are needing easter stuff for the kids for in the morning, additional items for the easter dinner as well as volunteers to help do just about everything. They are open 24 hours so the items can be taken their at any time.
