Does anyone remember a Darrell Pennington that was supposed to have died in the 1980's in a car wreck with some other students? Did he really die? Or was it a hoax. was wondering as I met him back in 1994. Weird as my hubby at that time introduced us and he knew him well as he went to school with him and was good friends with him in the 80's and he stated he was supposed to have been dead. HUMMM still wondering about that day as he and his girlfriend even took us home in his car. I swear to goodness this is true not a faux lie I have no reason to lie as I did not even know the dude. Just seriously thinkin about that even now.WOW that was messed up.

What "BADGIRL" posted has to be one of the sickest and cruelest things I have ever seen written on the topix.com website.

I knew who Darrell was. He was older than me by a few years, but always nice. He was just the typical 19 yr old in 1986 when he was killed in that horrific car accident on 67 North.

How can someone be so cruel as to post such an outrageous writing? Darrell and the three others passed away when their vehicle struck a tree. You can still to this day see the tree marked with a cross. To suggest that it was some sort of hoax? How dare you! Do you not think his family still misses and grieves over a lost child, someone who had bright future, only to have it snuffed out in an instant?

Darrell impacted a lot of lives in his few years on this planet. When he and the four others died, it was the first time, even at my young age, that I realized how fragile life really is. His death caused me to make changes to my own life in a positive way that still stay with me today. For that, I will always be grateful.

All I can say to "BADGIRL" is SHAME ON YOU! May God forgive but if he doesn't I'm sure Satan has a special place waiting for you along with the other people who have no feelings whatsoever.

To his family, I'm sorry for what that person wrote. Just know that Darrell is still remembered to this day by many people and will never be forgotten.

First Iamoatu i don't hate. and speechless you are very right I am being serious. I had no reason to lie. My husband had no reason to lie. He knew whom he was talking to as he was friends with him in high school. I am not one to take people's feelings lightly I am sorry to step on toes and yes I was just asking questions trying to figure things and the truth out. My hubby whom passed away himself in 2000 actually introduced us and then this Darrell actually introduced his girlfriend to us.My hubby thought it was really super strange that he was supposed to have died in the accident also, but he was there.( Hubby did not mention the accident) We even played volleyball on their team. It was just wierd. And by the way, neither of us drunk or did any drugs we were originally there with our church group and then they all left we got a ride home in his car. Now 3 weeks later the car he had had in high school my hubby recognized (and it was not the one we went home in, was bought by another man as he was driving it around town and he had bought it from a man in the late 80's My daughter was even with us and she was 11. As I stated I had no idea whom he even was until my hubby saw him. Now you all tell me. Anyhow sorry I stepped on toes, but just questioning the story and the paper. Stranger things have happened in mine and other people in this world's lives. Look at the Resurection Mary story in Chicago. Heck she asks for rides, goes to a bar and dances with men and she has been dead for years. Excuse me, but we actually touched this person on the shoulder. So please don't judge me speechless. Sorry if this hurts. Again. Just wanted the truth of the matter and just got to remembering RIP whomever that got killed in the wreck.

There is NO WAY Darrell's death could have been faked or the accident a hoax.

Why did you pick now to bring this up?

Who was your husband who died in 2000? Is he really dead?

I saw the vehicle they died in first hand, a trans am or something like that. It was a tragedy. Why can't you let someone that's been dead for 24 years rest in peace?

He is buried in the city cemetary. If you want to continue this, go to his family, go to the media. Let them exhume his body if there is enough reason or declare you crazy.

Just because it is the month of Halloween does not make local tragedies fair game for people like you that only want to glean a reaction here.

Darrel was a great person and there were many people in this town that loved him. His death and the death of those with him that horrible night devastated many people, some who still to this day have not recovered. The only thing that this type of thing will do is re-open that wound and cause more pain.

Please out of respect for those that have passed and those still here on this side of the veil missing them, let this thread die. If you truly question whether or not Darrel passed, go to the proper authorities and not here for your answers.

I am not trying to be an a-- I jus know what I saw and whome I met and I cannot help it if something pops up in my mind not due to the fact it is October or whenever I do not control my mind on things that happen to pop up from the past and when it does. And I don't really give a crap as to whether he was dead in the first place or not I did not know him, and yes the one I met was truly a nice person. And another thing Why would I come on here and bring up something I truly know that happened to me and my (yes deceased hubby Dennis) if it had not happened. Yes he is dead and yes it is still hard even though I am remarried to ever get over him due to the fact he was such a popluar and nice person also. I truly understand and really did not mean to start a bad deal I was just curious as another name came up on the internet that just got me thinking about this. Sorry and will drop it. Excuse me for being curious in life.
No I am not going to go ask a stupid authority to dig up someone's grave that is not cool!. Only the person I met and talked with truly knows if they are gone or not. RIP TO EVERYBODY INVOVLED IN THE WRECK and condolenses to the families. END OF TOPIC

I found this thread and I have to say I was a bit horrified and surprised at the same time.

I was heartbroken for months after Darrell died and hardly a day goes by that I don't still think about him. We'd sneek off some nights, go cruising, kick back in his car and drink some beer while we watched the stars or just talked about life. We were officially just friends but he was my first love. He had the best smile of any guy I've ever known.

I really wish everything about him actually being alive were true. I can't imagine it being real but I also can't imagine anyone making up such a story either for no reason.

Does anyone have any idea what all this was about???

Omg I can't believe this topic. Darrell was a sweet guy from awesome parents and I was friends with the two girls Jackie and Gina. It was a horrible accident and it saddens me to this day to think of them. They were taken way too soon. Rip my friends.

It was horrible, yes, but it was not an accident - unless you think it was an "accident" that Chuck was voluntarily consuming large quantities of alcoholic beverages and driving a car with his friends that he obviously had no regard for - it was sheer stupidity. Furthermore, these kids were not "taken" - their lives were taken by a negligent peer. They were killed as the result of a car wreck by a drunken "friend"... with "friends" like that who needs enemies?
Don't try to lessen what happened that night. Gina, Darrell, and Jackie did not deserve to die in that Camaro wrapped around a tree.

I had no idea there was alcohol involved. I was unfortunate enough to see the vehicle up close afterward, it was horrible to look at. Why was this not brought out at the time? Because Chuck's mother was an attorney?

Regardless of the reasons it happened, every one of them chose to ride in the vehicle so I wouldn't put the blame on anyone. It was just a tragedy that I for one will never forget.

Also, I believe that the tree they hit is still marked with a white cross to this day, out on the curve by the Sears Youth Center.

When the agreement going to the concert that day was "you drive up, I'll drive back", the sleeping passengers had no control over the driver drinking most of the way back from St. Louis, and if Darrell had known, HE would have stayed sober and been driving. Does that mean the wreck would not have occurred? No. A deer may have run out in front of the car or Darrell may have fallen asleep (not alcohol induced); but at least then it would have been an accident and not the result of alcoholic negligence.

Could Darrell Pennington have survived the car wreck or faked his death?

There would have to be a huge reason behind it, if it happened.

The lady that originally wrote this post didn't seem to have a bad reason for writing it. I think she's telling the truth.

If Darrell Pennington IS still alive, the only question is... Who is buried at his gravesite at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery?
