I drove into PB this morning --- got to Aldi's @ 8:20 --- they open @ 9AM. I wanted to buy one of the generators they had for $399. About 8:30 a lady came out to tell everyone the generators were all gone ! WTF ! Seems like they had given out coupons to hold generators for people. I never heard of such BS. She said we could put our names on a list & maybe they would get some more in in a couple of days. Supposedly they had gotten in 26 of them , but they were all gone.

Well, Sharper Image items are/were sold at Goody's! Sharper Image, closed stores & I'm sure that's the reason.

Generators at Aldi's?? That's crazy! Maybe they're trying to be the next WALMART!
Bet you'd have a hard time trying to return one, should you need to!

Aldi's is like the WalMart of Europe --- check it out on Google. If you do more checking, you will find lots of other major brands of generators that have motors made in China ( what isn't?). It won't be long before Brigg's moves over there.

ALDI's offers weekly specials on non-grocery items. They have laptops, digital cameras, cookware, digtal movie cameras, and other sale items.

I bought USB port hubs, a 24-in-1 card reader, and other items at Aldi's.

What tne OP was trying to point out was the way the situation was handled. From what was heard on the parking lot at 8:30AM the "blue number slips" were handed out to people waiting on the parking lot at 5AM......WTF!!! Aldi's doesn't open at 5AM. I thought it was illegal to sell advertised items before the advertised opening time. Typical for PB though, you try to get in line and buy something but employees of the company have leaked info to their friends and the friends get the goods first.....it's the "good ole boy" system!

If you need a generator we have a few left and are getting a few more this week. If you need one just e-mail me at p.soice@yahoo.com. We are in Butler County. I was at Aldi's when that happen and I am sorry that so many people are like that.

Briggs already has one plant over there and is working on starting up another one together with another company... From what I hear that other company is the same one that owns Revere Plastics, a supplier of Briggs and Stratton.

They have rain checks that you can pick up to get the items when they are back in stock.

^ AP story from 10/04/07 showing China receiving some of the jobs from the Rolla Plant shutdown

http://thepanelist.com/Profiles/Company/_2008... shows that:

"The Rolla factory will be closed, and 500 jobs moved to China. The company's April 19, 2007 third-quarter earnings report web cast hints at the possibility of more plants being phased out in the next 2-3 years and production moved to the Czech Republic (where labor costs are lower and shipping to the $2-million European sales market is cheaper and faster), and a general disinclination to get with an emission's reduction program."

READ THAT CAREFULLY!

http://www.aihuamotors.com/timeline.html shows something even more disturbing, the most recent edition to their company timeline:

# Business negotiation with Briggs & Stratton.
# New branch factory being constructed.

The information about the joint venture with revere came from a subscription access business monitor service that I don't have access to at the moment, so I am unsure of it. I know a portion of the PB revere plants production goes to the chinese B&S plants, so it would stand to reason that someone is going to take over that production on-site. As a supplier, Revere likes to have plants right next to their customers. They do so with B&S here in PB and also they have a plant next to a Whirlpool facility, whom they also supply.

Oh, that's nothing new. I thought you were getting all conspiracy theorist on us. It is no secret that B&S has a plant in china. Just like Revere likes to have plants next the company it serves...Briggs likes to have plants in the region it serves (where it makes sense to do so). The horizontal engines that are made in Chongqing are primarily used in third world countries in agricultural equipment. These are the engines that used to be made in Rolla. The Czech plant makes the small engines that Murray Ky makes because they can't make enough to supply demand. Europe has a crap load of small lawns...perfect for the small engine.

Right now, The Poplar Bluff plant is the only plant in the world that makes the Quantum and Professional Series (W14) engines. The Quantum isn't going to be made anywhere else . It is outdated technology. The question is will the pro series come down in price enough to take the Quantum's place or will there have to be a new engine design to take it's place? And where will the new engine be produced? Hopefully in PB. If you add shipping from China to the US, Our engines are cheaper to make here. Our labor costs vs units built are second to none.

The Rolla plant was shut down because it couldn't make money, plain and simple. It was purely business. Briggs didn't just say one day "let's move that plant to china". If you had a hamburger joint that was never in the black for umpteen years, I bet you would go bankrupt.

You can speculate all you want from the outside looking in. But I have worked there for over a decade and it is the best job I've ever had.
