Hayden's is one of my favorite restaurants in PB. I've never had a bad meal there.

I use to go down and have a chocolate malt made with chocolate ice cream. I was a chubby kid and Roy several times would say you sure look like you need that. He was nice to us kids though. Unlike his wife, she was rude to the customers and to Roy too. She was usually drunk (sometimes both were) but the whole community or neighboor hood back then knew and seem to just take it in stride as the norm for them. It was good food though. She use to put the bar-b-que sauce on the buns with a paint brush. I always thought that was kind of strange as a kid.

Joe and David Stokely, I haven't heard those names in many years.

Great to see Joe Stokely's name on here.
I remember Haydens back in the day living at the corner of Lester and Selma streets.
Haydens have those fantastic pink lemonades, and I could drink a couple of 'em at a time!
Congrats John on keeping a great Poplar Bluff institution alive! Sixty years....Wow!

I love Haydens and always have. Great tasting bbq and the best lemonades (a bit pricey but worth it). I hope it sticks around another 60 years!

I used to live in the basement apartment of the old Franklin house on east Main when my oldest son was just a toddler. Sometimes, on weekends when we just couldnt go anywhere or money was tight, we would take an "adventure walk" thru that undeveloped lot across the street and would end that "adventure" with pink lemonades from Hayden's...He is 32 now but still talks about those walks and how much he loved that lemonade. I havent been back thru there for quite some time..glad to know they are still in business...Anyone know if that lot there on the corner of Maude and I guess..9th street... is still undeveloped? If so, I guess I need to head back some weekend, take some pix of ol' PB...and maybe get a lemonade :)

I think it is still undeveloped. Wonder who owns that property?

It was owned by and called Fergusons grove, across the street was Piggy Hoggs, and the laundromat. The property was either donated or sold to the city a few years ago and they now have it under brushed and cleaned up with walkways and picnic tables for public use.

There was another small grocery store on the north main end called Main Street Market owned by Mr. Coonce, but it's torn down for a long time.

Thanks! That's it...when I lived on East Main, Coonce's grocery was a video movie rental store..(I think)..might have been a book store, tho..now I am not so certain..lol...but the laundrymat was still across 9th there..I am glad that they are using that lot as a park...would hate to see it used for anything else...

Yes, it is and you hardly get 1/2 cup and enough to wash down your sandwich by the time they put so much ice in it, but, it is certainly scrumptious. It also seems to me like they are making the bbq's skimpier in the past year or so. Maybe I am wrong, but they seem to have very little meat. What little you get is delicious though. I also like the Dexter Queen,(Leons) in Dexter. They have the other best BBQ sandwich in the area.

Back in the day, the pink lemonades seemed plenty big and they tasted mighty fine! Salutations to Joe.

I ate at Hickory Log in Dexter last week...first time in a long time. Was very disappointed. What happened to them???? Haydens and Big D's puts them to shame these days. I heard Dexter BBQ was real good, too.
