Regardless of what anyone believes they know for a fact, the right that businesses can refuse service, etc... READ THE FEDERAL GUIDELINES that were signed into law.

Credit Card transactions (those transactions processed as CREDIT even on a debit card) can have a $10 minimum limit.

Debit Card transactions (those actually processed using a PIN) CANNOT have a limit.

Yes people, there is a difference in the way they work, the transaction fees charged to merchants may be different for both. Still, they cannot according to federal regulations and law have a limit imposed on a debit card transaction.

Argue how right or wrong it is, how merchants have these rights, those right, whatever rights. It comes down to the FACT that a $5 minimum purchase on a DEBIT CARD TRANSACTION is NOT allowable!
Okay I put up a sign that if you come into my business that I will not accept a credit device of any kind debit or charge under five dollars.

You come in and try to buy a soda and I point at the sign. Now I am in violation of a federal law that regulates the level of commerce that I "have" to enter into.

Yeah get this into court.

Go to an ATM and draw out two dollars from your account....wait most ATMs have a ten dollar minimum that means they are "violating a regulation" too!!!!

What I find odd is that no one seems to give a damn that what the retailers are doing is illegal!!! They cannot make a customer spend more than they planned to... their fees are their problems and if they can't afford better rates and have to take from the consumers to pay for a service, they shouldn't have the machine anyway. Let alone, most people WITH real money don't carry cash on them, so NOT having 5 cash simply means we have too much money to carry in the first place. The ppl that have so much to say about not holding 5 bucks are the number one ppl with no money in a bank, no direct deposit (if their sad ass co even offered it), they are prolly paid cash under the table at a dead end job... the point is that a convenient store CANNOT make you spend more to charge yo card!!!
They are not making you spend anything.....

O! And there should NEVER be a minimum on a debit card purchase! Only on credit cards are stores even allowed to do such a thing...

Any place of business that refuses my cards (credit/debit) for any purchase simply looses.

Years ago "john" at a certain mini-mart on 142 refused the only card I carried for a small purchase. For many years "john" gladly took my card in exchange for fuel, sandwiches, beer, cigs...

Granted "john" would take a small lose on this singular purchase and frankly I couldn't understand how the card with years of wear from the mini-mart "john" owned could be refused...

For a few years, not a single cent of mine has passed to "john"...

John took a stand and saved a few cents with a very stupid rule and lost a customer for life...
I work at "johns" and he requires a 5.00 purchase for everyone! You are being a baby stop you fussing and just spend the 5.00!!!! You apparently are not missed!

I see both points. However, those of you who just say "Spend the $5.00" Would you get mad if you had a credit card that had a minimum payment due of say,$10.00 but the credit card issuer says you have to pay $15.00 instead? Would you let that go? Be HONEST in ALL of your dealings and everyone wins. JMO.

On the other hand, businesses such as JD's and such do NOT have to take cards, period. Then what would you do? JMO again.

That would be a loss of five dollars. No one is making you spend anything with a five dollar minimum .

I went to JD's on Main Street a few days ago to make a small purchase, under $5. I was told the minimum purchase using a debit card was $5. I did not have cash on me and refused to purchase more than I needed just to be able to use a debit card.

Their policy is ILLEGAL according to federal guidelines. A retailer may have a $10 minimum charge on CREDIT CARD purchases but NOT on DEBIT CARD purchases.

For those of you who don't know, a Debit Card purchase is used with a PIN and a Credit Card purchase does not require a PIN. There is a difference.

I think this store needs to investigate the regulations and change their policies.
just about every gas station around has a debit card minimum limit these days, and I hate it !!

Most half ass businesses have the five dollar sign. My story is in small town Indiana. Kids wanted lunch, so I stopped by a gas station and payed cash for chicken fingers, fries and some drinks. When I went back for a few snacks I didn't have enough cash for a couple of ding dongs. Was denied of my debit card because I didnt have 10$ worth of purchases. I bought gas and snacks here from the past. They lost a customer.

It's legal and should be in all the other states. Why? When you make a purchase, part of your profit goes to the credit card company and if you make a dollar purchase... What profit do you make? Quit complaining, it's 5 dollars!!! Like anybody already cares about how much money they throw up using their credit card.

Alot of places do this, it not just JD's and there is nothing illegal about it! They are charged on every card purchase so its nothing personal! The people who own JD's are very nice people and just trying to run a business! Their staff are friendly, so instead of running them down on topix make a puchase on your card of $5 or go elsewhere! I am not a owner or employee, just another customer!
