I went to JD's on Main Street a few days ago to make a small purchase, under $5. I was told the minimum purchase using a debit card was $5. I did not have cash on me and refused to purchase more than I needed just to be able to use a debit card.

Their policy is ILLEGAL according to federal guidelines. A retailer may have a $10 minimum charge on CREDIT CARD purchases but NOT on DEBIT CARD purchases.

For those of you who don't know, a Debit Card purchase is used with a PIN and a Credit Card purchase does not require a PIN. There is a difference.

I think this store needs to investigate the regulations and change their policies.

They are charged for you to use this card. Quit your bitchin and use it as a credit card if you dont want to buy "more than you need".

Agree! I don't think five dollars is too much to ask. I don't go to this particular store but if the one I go to had a rule like that I don't think I would mind.

report them to the beeter bussiness bureau if you feel that you have been mistreated, For their sake, I hope that they have a store policy manual and have the 5.00 limit posted

It does not matter what their policy is, their policy violates federal regulations. It doesn't matter if it's only $5 or not. THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THIS ON DEBIT PURCHASES.
Also, if their merchant card services provider was aware of this, they could have their ability to accept credit cards pulled.

Any place of business that refuses my cards (credit/debit) for any purchase simply looses.

Years ago "john" at a certain mini-mart on 142 refused the only card I carried for a small purchase. For many years "john" gladly took my card in exchange for fuel, sandwiches, beer, cigs...

Granted "john" would take a small lose on this singular purchase and frankly I couldn't understand how the card with years of wear from the mini-mart "john" owned could be refused...

For a few years, not a single cent of mine has passed to "john"...

John took a stand and saved a few cents with a very stupid rule and lost a customer for life...

To all you people. This to inform you that when u use ur card the store is being charged for every transaction that occurs. so if it is below 5 dollars they do refuse because of the fact that they get charged.

I know for a fact the credit card companies notified business to limit under $10.00 charges. So $5.00 is being very good to customers. And yes debit cards are treated the same as credit cards.

Regardless of what anyone believes they know for a fact, the right that businesses can refuse service, etc... READ THE FEDERAL GUIDELINES that were signed into law.

Credit Card transactions (those transactions processed as CREDIT even on a debit card) can have a $10 minimum limit.

Debit Card transactions (those actually processed using a PIN) CANNOT have a limit.

Yes people, there is a difference in the way they work, the transaction fees charged to merchants may be different for both. Still, they cannot according to federal regulations and law have a limit imposed on a debit card transaction.

Argue how right or wrong it is, how merchants have these rights, those right, whatever rights. It comes down to the FACT that a $5 minimum purchase on a DEBIT CARD TRANSACTION is NOT allowable!

nobody wants to standing line behind you losers who use a debit card to buy a can of mountain dew.
Nobody wants to stand behind you while you're trying to use your EBT card to buy energy drinks, so I guess that we're even.

Is it so important to be right over less than 5 dollars...get real. If you don't want to go there don't! It would probably be a better place with out you Customer! I have always been treated especially well there. Yes I use my debit card for gas and other things. If it is under it is just understood they need cash. If you are so small minded take your less than 5 dollars somewhere else!

Really do so many make less than a $5 purchase that it's an issue? Why make a customer spending $4.99 and trying to get to work pick something else out when they simply needed a $4.99 item? Again, are there so many out there using a debit/credit card for small purchases that it becomes an issue?
