How is it that a pool hall that serves beer can allow 13-18 year old inside. My daughter (16) "thought" she was going to go and play pool and so I called to check out if they served beer. The persons comment to me was "Yes, but we don't give it to the kids!" Kids really need to be allowed to go into a place like that with a bunch of buzzed men and women. Needless to say she did not go! There really needs to be a place for these kids to go and have fun in a safe environment in Poplar Bluff.

Uh, they serve beer in every restaurant in town. Not really a valid argument. Do you allow your child to head to Applebee's unsupervised? What about wal mart? Those pushers dont even sell singles, they make you buy SIX or more at a time!!!

No worries though, instead of going and having a nice evening playing pool they will go hang out a a friends house, smoke some weed, and hang out baked all night. That will of course escalate to the need to actually buy the stuff, and they will have to head to the local dealer, who will offer them meth. They will pick some of that up too, just to try when their parents wont let them go with their friends next time. Five years down the road when your daughter is all cracked out you wont link the two together, but the evidence will be there if you get the whole story.

I saw a lot of "sheltered" kids go that route the second they got some freedom, and i think is a big part of the problem in this town. Nothing to do most of the time other than drugs and sex. Many get into trouble with one or the other before they hit 18, much less 21.

Anywhere in public in PB is about as safe as you get in the US. In major metropolitan areas i can understand you being concerned about hitting a shady pool hall in the bad part of town for fear she would get raped/mugged/killed on the way out or in the bathroom or something. Here in PB though i would suspect that our rate for that sort of thing is very low. Drivers will be out anyway, and beer is easy to smell on someones breath if you were concerned about her getting some.

At 16, your daughter is one year from being able to go it on her own, dont you think its time to let the leash out?

And every restaurant in town does not serve beer. How can you have a nice evening playing pool with a bunch of drunks. And who are you to put a tag on every teenager...so if they don't play pool they will smoke week and then do meth....I would hope that the leash is pretty tight at 16. As long as my kids reside in my house they will abide by my rules.

Everyone has their own opinion so I won't get on here and tell anyone how they should feel about StopLight Billiards. I personally like the place but if you feel like it is innappropriate for your children then do not take them there. Bluff Billiards on Vine St. used to be smoke-free, alcohol free, no cussing, clean place to play pool. I haven't been there in years but if you are looking for good clean fun then you might try Bluff Billiards.

I, too, have been to Stop Light Billiards and had a good time. It's not a bad place to go and it is in a convenient location. I had a few guys ask for my number but nothing ever got out of hand. But if you are concerned, im pretty sure that Bluff Billiards is still ran the same way. It has been a while since I have been in there, though. Im not all that excited about the location, especially at night, but go and check it out. It is over by Hay's music and the pet store downtown.

The post never said that all kids were doomed to fail anyway. The post said that if you dont let your kids go somewhere public and have fun they will just go to a friends house instead.

What exactly is wrong with being around drunk people? You can be around drunk people anywhere was the point. In a pool hall people tend not to get trashed anyway, its hard to play when youre very drunk.

The problem is when parents keep the leash too tight for too long, or when they take it off to early. Letting it out a bit as they get older exposes them to adult things slowly, and under your supervision. If you never let them do anything at all till they turn 18, then all the sudden they have all this freedom and no clue how to be responsible with it. This often leads them to make some very poor decisions that can have disastrous consequences down the road. You can argue that all day long, but i have seen it MANY times with my own eyes.

Not every one, but many do sell it. Your children can move out at 17 legally. Your job as a parent is to prepare your children to be adults. Sheltering them doesnt do that, it actually does the opposite. It leaves them incapable to deal with the things that they will inevitably have to face. As for the rest, read the above post.

Oh, and if you dont compromise with someone who is almost an adult, it is likely they will just lie to you, if they arent already.

For those of you who think that Stop Light is a bad place because it serves alcohol, you need to get over it. If your child is 16 and asks for alcohol then the problem starts with them. If they have a problem with someone at Stop Light who is drinking, Danny is the first to throw them out if they are out of line.

Danny is just a good ol boy who believes that everyone ought to have a good time, and be able to behave themselves. If you don't want to behave, take it outside, but if you want to start crap, he's not gonna put up with it. Serving alcohol in the presence of 13-18 yr olds isn't illegal. Most of the people who go there drink a couple, or drink soda. It isn't like they're handing out vodka shots at the dang door.

You have the right to protect your 16 yr old. But if she is out to do 'wrong' she'll find it without your help. Teach her values that she respects and she will learn to behave appropriately through your good example. And she will make mistakes too.....unless your child is of the non-human-born-perfect variety.

Stop Light Billiards is a great place. Go there WITH your 16 yr old and THEN you can judge. If you don't go, then you have no right to an opinion.

As far as his rebel flag, or his taste in music, geez, people are so whiny! If I owned the place it would play music I liked, and I wouldn't listen to Hank Williams Jr, or some of the rap, pop, hard rock, alternative music that is out there. As the owner, if a song is offensive, or annoying, they have the right to censor it. As far as the decor, just be glad it isn't a bunch of naked women..........although some of you creeps would LOVE that, because that is MORE respectful to humans than the rebel flag. Right? Or a skull and crossbones motif? Perhaps images of Jesus everywhere? Or, a blazing pictures of a burning American flag? There are lots of offensive ways to express yourself in this country. Just be glad the place isn't something worse. If you don't like it, then don't look. By the way, does Wal-Mart sell anything with rebel flags on it? Does that make it right for people to go starting crap there? NO.

As far as 'clean' the place is safer than a dancing bar, and most of that is because Danny just expects it. If you want to fight, take it outside. If you want to get stupid, don't bother others while doing it. Danny would be the first guy to drag a guy out of there if he was buzzed and aggravating a girl. He wouldn't tolerate it, even if it was someone he knew. So chivalry isn't dead as far as that is concerned.

Stop Light is a good place to have clean fun.

The flag is there because he put it there. Big deal. And maybe it was you that needed to leave, because people who behave get to stay, regardless of race, creed, color, religion, or sexual orientation. If you are being loud or unruly, it doesn't matter if you're green, you can be asked to leave.

Oh, so angry! Calm down before you give yourself a heart attack. It's not worth it. Just go somewhere else if you don't like the place. It isn't like you HAVE to go there if you don't like it there!

There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc. And then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction.
You call me 'White boy,''Cracker,''Honkey,''White y,''Caveman'... and that's OK.
You have the United Negro College Fund.
You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez
Day. You have Yom Hashoah.
You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP. You have BET... If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) we'd be racists.
If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists.
If we had White History Month, we'd be racists.
If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives we'd be racists.
A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant.
If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships...You know we'd be racists.
There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US .
Yet if there were 'White colleges' That would be a racist college.
In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights.
If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.
You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it.
But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.
I am proud...But you call me a racist.
Why is it that only whites can be racist??
