I have nothing but respect for people that are resourceful enough to find a way to get through college without government assistance. It gives you a better appreciation for hard work and the value of a dollar rather than accepting handouts (and then griping about the handouts)...

I would rather work my way through or owe $60K in student loans than accept a handout.

Non Pel Ceck Recipient, I disagree with you. Education should be an entitlement. Maybe then, your whole idea that these people should budget better and so forth would work. How long ago was it that you went? I ask because you say you had a factory job and started your own business. Did yo do all this right after you graduated highschool. Most people now days that go to college don't go straight into the work force and then into college. Most are young 18-21 years old and have yet to learn how to manage and budget money because they are just getting on their own, and learning. The fact that you did all you did without a pell grant is great, but that doesn't mean that's how it should be. Maybe if people where entitled to an education, and learned to budget, and work hard, we wouldn't be in the economic crisis we are in now. You say you "earned" yourself a GI bill. Are these people not earning their education when they become doctors, lawyer, nurses, teachers, and productive citizens in this world? I guess to you they aren't. I guess to you, it would be better for these people to not better themselves with this "free education," but to learn nothing, have no skills, so that we can regress even further. Be careful what you wish for.
Entitlements are unconstitutional and should be removed all together. The constitution does not provide any welfare money or education. They can learn to manage money real fast if they have none coming in. People expect to have all the things those who have worked hard and done without for years have accrued, right off the bat. That is why you see welfare people walking around with expensive cell phones and other things of that nature. I have put myself through college and worked for years and just got to where I can afford a cell phone. If you dont have enough money, you do what it takes to make more or spend less. It is really very simple and in this country, everyone has the same opportunity if they choose to persue it. I ave never owned a brand new car and probably wont ever. We have totally lost focus on entitlements. There should be a limit on the time it can be used. I am behind young people at the grocery store, dressed nicer than me and wearing expensive jewelry and talking on cell phones and they pull out a food stamp card. Rediculous. Whole families and generations of people are on welfare and food stamps because that is a right of passage, evidently in some families. When you get old enough, you go down to the welfare office and signup. Signed, disgusted

Those students that have ever worked on campus as a work-study or part-time worker understand how the process of financial aid works. For those students who haven't, stop by any of the offices and if you ask politely, I bet they could show you how the process of financial aid works and then maybe everyone wouldn't be in such a hurry to complain about how long it takes to receive refunds for "free" money for attending school.
The money I get is definitely not free.... I get a LOAN and will have to pay the money back after I'm done with school..... Because I have done the responsible thing and not got myself knocked up and because I keep a job I can't get any type of grants. I make 16,000 a year a don't qualify for any grants..... it's bullshit! I'm busting my ass working while some dumbasses churn out kid after kid and don't work and get grant after grant and then what really pisses me off is they usually don't even finish school.

I don't think you should judge people so harsh with the economy the way it is. I have worked hard all my life and 25 years later I have to start over. I have worked hard for what I have including my cell phone. My parents have worked hard for everything they had. Have you ever had anyone tell you that you was over qualified for a job? or that you had all the qualifications and experience but you had to have a college degree??Yes that girl might of had nice jewelry but, had she previous worked her butt off to buy the ring when her financial times was better??? Between her and her family they have probly paid in more taxes than they will ever alot her on a foodstamp card. Maybe thanks to that card her child had a hot meal that night. We shouldn't judge people until we have walked in their shoes. Given I know what you are talking about I have seen them to and those kind make me furious also but not everyone is a 2nd generation food stamp card carrier or made a career of having babies and living off the system. I came to this site looking for answers I am waiting on a check from pell and a student loan because I have had to invest money I don't have and use my savings that needed to go toward other things because I was told I could get a pell grant and a student loan and go to college and 3 months later I still havn't seen any money to replace what I have already spent. I want to go to college to change my career choice to get a better job but please it is unnerving to see those kind of people but, stop a minute and take a look what is their story what has happened to them to get them to this point?? but, yes you might still come with the conclusion get a job!

After one, you would think they would get smart. But, as I heard a physician say, you dont have to be smart to breed.
You need to go back and read the post. She clearly explained it. She was married, then divorced her cheatin man. THus she is a single mom. Duh.

Topix is definitely not the right place to look for answers. I also question why so many women have babies when they are not married. It does not make sense because research shows they usually cannot make it financially and welfare money is a crappy life. They are setting themselves up for misery. Accidents happen, but not at the rate it is happening today. People just dont think or dont care. It is cruel to a child to be raised without a stable father or family. That is one reason so many kids are doing poorly in school and other areas of life. Society is messed up and we cannot keep rewarding these behaviors with money and support. One time shame on the mom, the second time, shame on the taxpayers for paying. The carefree men who father the kids are also at fault, but the fact remains, the woman is going to have to protect herself and her body and a potential child she might bear.

If you had any sense, you would have read her reply to his original question, and saw that she divorced on understandable terms. Quit living with your head up your ass you prick. We aren't in the dark ages anymore. You are going on and on about tax payers money, just how much taxes do you pay? More than everyone else? I think not. Just because you are an asshole, doesn't give you the right to speak for any other tax payer.

It's hard to pay taxes on minimum wage and I don't blame some for complaining about government waste, but most of the people going to school have paid taxes or have parents or grandparents who have. Be glad that the people here are getting some of it instead of foreigners or aliens.

I am going online to college and have a degree in Paralegal and cannot get a job squat with my degree but unfortunatly I am still in college on a Bachelor's degree for business management (Main in Healthcare, I don't wanna quit in the middle of it though But do you think anyone will hire me in this town? I have tried and tried and no on is hiring even with a college degree for the 2 above and I was told that they were the best ones to go for. HA HA college degrees are not worth the paper they are wrote on unless you are a nurse or doctor or an ACTUAL Attorney. Anyone out here wanna hire me to prove me wrong? Thanks. By the way I cannot move again as I have elderly family in this town that needed me back so their are no options to do this so I have to stay here.
