In a consumer crazed, "throw it away", "I can't be bothered to recycle" society what do we expect! Both my neighbors on average generate five times the volume of trash I do every week and only one recycles. Where do people find all that they are throwing away? No, I am not a hoarder.

Check out the Mt. Trashmore in Brevard County right along side of I95. Where exactly are you all proposing to put your garbage, if not Broward's Mount Trashmore?
We used to live west of there,(Broward's landfill), and the odor was in the air periodically. Then, we didn't smell it anymore. Maybe the winds had changed.
In any case, Creek used to be nice and rural and now, it's another south Florida cesspool.
The hill's been there longer than most of the residents there.

In 2002 it did smell strongly of rotten eggs and the smell permeated the area. At some point in the next year the smell disappeared entirely and never returned.
Yes!! We lived a few miles from it for 15 years and NEVER smelled it other than for a brief time one year.
It must have been,(as you said), in 2002. Then, never again.
It was/is an interesting feature and the grass is very green on it.
It never bothered me.
Anyone who's b*tching about it now, moved close to it KNOWING it was there.
I think Waste Management is doing a great job.
The complainers need to move.

Then why Ethel, did you move next to a garbage pile in the first place? There are plenty of places to live that are not close to one.
Reminds me of the complaint people make about airplane noise when they choose to purchase a home near an airport....DUHHHH!
How bad can it be if she has stayed there for 23 years?

And your solution is what?

No one wants trash in their backyard, but it has to go somewhere. I like the solution mention around page 2 for recycling it into fuel.

In the 21 century there has to be a way to recycle all the glass and metal, and burn the rest. There is no more room to build dumps.

Some people live where they can afford a home and where they found available for them to be close to work or other. I would not say it is as easy as saying DUUH move somewhere else, you do not know what they would have to sacrifice to move.
Impacts that may occur from landfill operations; pollution of the local environment (such as contamination of groundwater and/or aquifers by leakage or sinkholes and residual soil contamination during landfill usage, as well as after landfill closure); off gassing of methane generated by decaying organic wastes (methane is a greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide, and can itself be a danger to inhabitants of an area); harboring of disease vectors such as rats and flies, particularly from improperly operated landfills, which are common in developing countries; injuries to wildlife; and simple nuisance problems (e.g., dust, odor, vermin, or noise pollution). This list is growing steadily as time passes.
