Aunt Bettie Lou was either ignorant of her party's history, or feels her party is above the law or both.

Either way, it's hubris of the first order and certainly a snub, if not a flipping of the bird to the American people.

Why GOP Scandal Mongers Can’t Have Nice Things

As Bill Clinton and John Edwards and various others have made clear, Democrats do have scandals. Plenty of them actually. But here we have another good example of why Republicans so often have bad luck these days with bogus scandals they’re so hyped up about or ones that actually are legitimate scandals but which get overrun by so much hysterical nonsense that the actual scandal gets forgotten amidst a lava-like deluge of The Crazy. In a few words, most of the right-wing press is just astonishingly bad.

Here’s today’s example. Yesterday I heard word on Twitter that ex-IRS Chief Douglas Shulman had visited the White House a whopping 157 times. The story started at The Daily Caller. It’s not totally clear whether that was whopping or sub-whopping. But whatever. Clearly Shulman was there often enough to be in regular contact with President Obama about cracking down on the West Memphis Tea Party. When I first saw my usual twitter trolls yapping about it, the first thing that seemed a bit off was that, remember, Shulman was actually appointed by George W. Bush and remained in office through most of President Obama’s first term. So presumably he’s not a really strong Democratic partisan.

But now a real reporter (in this case my old friend Garance Franke-Ruta) has looked past the toplines of the White House visitor logs and done frankly just the very basic due diligence that any reporter would do when reporting out a story like this. There are a few problems with the story. First, why on Earth would Shulman need to visit the White House 157 times except to crack down on the Tea Party and other American Patriots? Well, it turns out there’s this thing conservatives have never heard of called OBAMACARE, which actually relies a fair amount on the IRS for implementation.

Take it away Garance …

The public meeting schedules available for review to any media outlet show that very thing: Shulman was cleared primarily to meet with administration staffers involved in implementation of the health-care reform bill. He was cleared 40 times to meet with Obama’s director of the Office of Health Reform, and a further 80 times for the biweekly health reform deputies meetings and others set up by aides involved with the health-care law implementation efforts. That’s 76 percent of his planned White House visits just there, before you even add in all the meetings with Office of Management and Budget personnel also involved in health reform.

But it gets better. Those 157 visits? Those are times he was ‘cleared’ to visit the White House. The logs only show he actually showed up 11 times. It’s quite possible that the records missed a couple visits. But it seems likely that the story - which originated at The Daily Caller - was off by about ten fold.

Now, this isn’t an indictment of conservative journalists. There are so many great ones like Byron York or my friend Eli Lake. But as a group, the standards of most institutional right wing journalism are just so appallingly bad that their stories simply aren’t credible.(I’d note that Lake works at either nonpartisan or slightly-progressive leaning pub.) Of course there are exceptions like the Menendez phony escort story. Which, wait, that ended up being a hoax enabled by appalling shoddy reporting standards. Again, if you wonder why conservative scandal mongers can’t have nice things … look at the conservative media.

Also, try finding real scandals.

ST. PAUL, Minn.(AP)— The Democrat gearing up for a rematch against U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann suspended his campaign Friday, proclaiming success in his goal to oust the polarizing conservative from Congress two days after she announced she wouldn't seek re-election.

In an email message to supporters, Jim Graves, who narrowly lost to Bachmann last year, said he felt his primary goal of unseating Bachmann was complete even if she decided to step away voluntarily rather than face him in a rematch race.

"We set out to defeat Rep. Bachmann, and that has been accomplished. You should feel incredibly proud," he wrote to his backers. "After all, it was the grassroots movement that you built that kept the pressure on and forced Rep. Bachmann from her seat in Congress."

Even as an Independent Homer agrees the Democrats ran a successfull campaign to oust Bachmann.

Kudos to them.

it probably worse than that. IMO its not that conservative journalists don't do their due diligence when reporting a story. I believe they purposely omit anything that doesn't support their conclusion/propaganda.

I sold my house and the title company handled the closing, the buyer's realtor tried to collect commision as both the seller's and buyer's commission. Since I had no realtor and sold the house on my own, no seller's commission was applicable. I stared down the realtor and said we agreed you would get 2 1/2 percent commission as the buyer's realtor, to which she replied oh yes my bad. They are all sneaky, needless to say the title company redid all the numbers.

Here let me tell you a funny......"you thought that was actually some sort of proof of something bad AGAINST the Republicans"
The NAACP criticized the IRS for taking nearly two years to complete the investigation, conducted under a "fast-track" process the IRS established in 2004 and continues to use in 2006. IRS letter states the agency was able to complete its investigation by watching a video of Bond's speech, noting that the "video footage allowed the Service to gain information regarding the context in which Mr. Bond's speech was made."

Bond, however, called the IRS's justification for its delay "dishonest and disingenuous," noting that the video and full text of the speech had been available on the NAACP website throughout the investigation and that no new evidence had emerged.

speaking of proof.....in that case, and as usual, proof won the day despite republican insinuations.

any idea of when FOX 'proof' will ever win the day?
