They need to down size and get rid of the unions. They shouldn't get to retire early and shouldn't have a pension like the 98% of the rest of us. A bunch of self described so called heroes who haven't put in a real days work in years. They make me ill everytime I drive by a station and see them walking around doing nothing most of the time.

Hey, I've got a great idea. Why don't you pay your own tuition and become a State certified EMT,(1 Year); then pay pay your own tuition to become a State certified paramedic (2 years), then pay your own tuition to go to the fire academy. When you complete all of this successfully, then go through the hiring process, come back and talk to me. You see Mr. Moron, all firefighters must now be State certified EMT's and paramedics.
Every item untrue....Florida taxpayers, were drinking the koolaid...we have lost control of our public employees...

I see many of you guys comments are from Florida, I can't say whether or not they are overpaid or not but the FDNY for what they make is definatly not overpaid. They max out at 65k a year I think, and like many other jobs can make more by collecting overtime. Not taking anything away from nurses but for the person who said nurses don't have it great again many do by me, they have great benefits, many make 6 figures, doctors as well. The cops by me which is 20 miles outside NY city make 100 plus a year and all they do is break up house parties. Teachers by me make 6 figures and up, where is the attack on them.

Stop arguing about this too if you want to make a point, you need to listen to both sides or know one will take you seriously.

Firefighters for major cities have scored the best out of hundreds, sometimes thousands of applicants with written and physical examinations, and have the highest credentials through college degrees and medical certifications. Sounds like sour grapes from a bunch of wash outs who couldn't hang with the big boys.

What I want to know is how the actuaries were allowed to project the cost of those pension plans using a high interest rate used to sell those retirements plans to the public only to then realize "opps" they misread the market and not be held accountable.
Then who wrote the law that says when the actuaries realize an "opps" the taxpayers have to make up the difference?
Thinking a little deeper on this, if I make a projection which is by law falls within an allowable range of projected interest rates which over the life of the pension plan will work out, why then is the public paying for benefits which will not be paid out for many years to come when the rates may rebound? This is causing millions to be paid into these plans by taxpayers that were never projected when they sold it to us at the start!
How was this allowed to happen and how do we prevent it from happening again? I know. Do away with those types of plans. Let the pensioner take the hit with the interest rates like a normal 401K plan does.

Hardly. Many departments require fire science degrees, EMT-B or EMT-P certs, and a rigorous physical ability test (CPAP). Either you have not applied in quite some time, or you are completely ignorant to the reality of the situation. I'm guessing both.

Dry your eyes, and put on a smile. Walmart discourages negative Nellies. Leave the real work to those who are actually qualified, intelligent enough, and strong enough. BTW, we ultimately pay your salaries too. But we usually shop at Target.

Look Guys: It's not sustainable, never was, isn't now. Raise the property tax enough and people will walk away. Many of you were and are working the system. It worked as long as the housing bubble was intact. Huge amounts of property tax money available for all kinds of neat stuff. News flash, the bubble burst and the money is gone.
Doesn't matter, try and fix it or leave it alone, the checks will cease either way.
Have a great Day!

Yeah,$80,000 isnt really that good, but we scrape by with our side jobs. And the free health insurance is nice. But I tell you what, the real burden is the constant sexual harassment we receive at every turn. Women think it is cool and objectify us like pieces of meat. They dont understand that we are real people on the inside. You are better off, trust me. Smile!

I noticed that all of the whining comes from southern Florida. I'm not mush of a conspiracy theorist, but I just found that to be a little interesting.
