Rumor has it, Atlantic City slots are tight.

Gamblers are hearing more complaints from their fellow players about how tight the Atlantic City slot machines are.

by Mary Wisetin

Atlantic city gamblers are spending much less of their disposable income on slots because their money doesn't seem to go as far as it once did. Atlantic City casinos, they say, have tightened their machines to boost the falling revenue.

“To most slot players it’s just not as much fun anymore" one Resorts casino gambler said “Your $20 only lasts a few minutes. It’s all take and no give now.”

What most slot players want more than anything is more time with their favorite slot machine rather than a quick kiss and go.

“They can have all the money we walk in with,” Absecon, N.J. resident Martha Burns said.“We just want to spend some time in the casino.”“It’s kind of a slap in the face,” she said.“I can remember when my money lasted much longer. Each year you get less and less slot play ... We can go out and have a meal that lasts longer than the money spent on slots."

Atlantic City slots are indeed tighter than they were a few years ago, according to the Gaming Control Board. Over the past few years, the data shows a gradual increase in casinos’ slot hold, or a lowering of the percentage of payout's returned to players.

Much of this can be explained by the fact that casinos have replaced many of their traditional dollar and quarter machines with new “penny” machines. Penny machines, which can cost as much to play as higher-denomination have a lower percentage of payback on average, than higher-denomination machines.

While there is no evidence that casinos in Atlantic City have fitted their existing slots with new computer chips to tighten them, though they acknowledged that it is a growing perception among players.

Unmentioned, are that players are dropping much less dollars in the slot machines each week — a lot less than in years past.

Officials of several locals Atlantic City casinos say they haven't tightened their machines to shore up shaky profits. In general, casinos have reported a huge drop-off in play from regular gamblers.

Casinos “are in a tough spot right now” because it’s difficult to assure players that we haven't tightened games, One casino executive said.“The word of mouth has been painful for us.”

Tightening machines “takes hours and hours of work and more hours of paperwork,” another casino executive said.“It’s a serious strategy that isn't done on a whim.”
It would be bad timing for any casino to tighten slot machines during this economic downturn, when customers are already watching their budgets and especially sensitive to corporate profit-boosting measures.

Some gaming executives and experts say customers are likely imagining that casinos have tightened their machines. Players are more aware of — and bothered by — their losses when the economy is bad.

Players have raised concerns about slot tightening that turned out to be unfounded, yet were triggered by certain events that raised suspicion, such as Atlantic City's casino's expensive new towers built by the casino's.

The tightening theory makes some sense during this downturn. Cutting back on comps and raising prices for things such as rooms and buffets, is difficult for locals casinos, where consumers expect deals and watch prices. The“price” of a slot machine, however, is hidden from the public. Why not lower the payback percentage, a theoretical number that has little effect on an individual’s short-term return yet can improve the casino’s profit over millions of spins?

Experts say, however, that lowering pay back percentages is fool hardy because it can backfire.

“A customer will forgive you if you tighten up on comps during a slowdown,” one gaming analyst said, "but not so with tighter machines."

Many Atlantic City casinos are looking like ghost towns during the weekday, when seniors generally gamble.

its NO RUMOR, it is FACT. the casinos have tightened the slots to a terrible extreme. i see a big change from even last year. no matter how much you play you cant win. you CAN win if you get the first chance of being ahead and then just stop playing for the rest of the stay.

My wife and I noticed the same thing and it just isn't fun anymore. We have the money to spend but seems we always leave losing. Used to be one of us would leave a winner or close to it. But know we are afraid when we leave at just how much we both lost. Doesn't make you feel like you want to go back, it's like they keep kicking you in the gut, and who the heck wants that all the time.

Why drive 3 hours when you can lose it in PA or DE. In DE at least it is Smoke Free. That's where my money is going.

I agree! It certainly isn't fun anymore, especially when you plan a casino trip, and "know" before you get there, that you are going to lose!
I always went to a casino with "hopes" of winning, and sometimes i did, isn't that the real attraction of gambling?
Not anymore! I guess casinos want us to accept the fact that we can't win anymore and just keep handing over our paychecks to them!

Hey, I have to disagree. I live near Atlantic City and i've been doing pretty well. I have to admit I cheat a little and take other peoples advice,( www.acslotguide.com ) for example. They waste their money finding out which slot machines pay and I just go to the ones that they recommend. It's been pretty decent so far.

Anyone had personal experience making less lately?

Sarah rumor or no rumor, i can speak for many of my friends and family members, no one wins anything anymore in AC. We have tried PA, and Conn, it's a big difference, you get longer play time and just as nice comps from them. Maybe they will tighten up like AC in a few years, but for now, PA and Conn. are obviously better!

Are you always this stupid? Re-read my post #4, the last couple sentences, what does it say dumba$$? Again, I’ll type it slow for you: Why drive 3 hours when you can lose it in PA or DE. In DE at least it is Smoke Free. That's where my money is going.

See where there is a Period then the next sentence reads – IN DE AT LEAST IT IS SMOKEFREE.

That’s the problem with today’s dumba$$ addicted smokers, YOU CAN’T READ!! Smokers for the most part are like hardcore drug users, you are just worried about your next smoke and god forbid anyone try and stop you no matter where or what you are doing. If you could comprehend you’d understand that SECOND HAND SMOKE IS HARMFUL.

Be a good little retired jersey BOY and go out next to the dumpster and smoke right where you belong.

If you had been here long enough you would know I am NOT a smoker. I enjoy a pipe some about twice a month. what I do not enjoy is losing my part time job because Some A-Hole does not want to be around smokers in the bar I was working at. then do not come into the bar SIMPLE LOGIC... I can show you hundreds of people in North Jersey who lost their jobs just after the smoking ban. and dozens of bar owners out of business. Because of Jerks who read the headlines and do NOT check the figures about Second Hand Smoke. Check for your self. the amount of carsinogens the Cancer society says is in SHS then compare it to what OSHA says is dangerous. It would take 2,500 cigarettes smoking at the same time in a small closed room to be near danger level.

UNEMPLOYMENT IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN SHS...

This has nothing to do with smoking. All the smokers can smoke til they rot for all I care.

My husband and I have been coming one weekend a month to AC for 30 years, and the machines have never been tighter. Years ago I'd bring a few hundred dollars to play quarter video poker, and I'd win a jackpot most of the time. I have a collection of those "sticks" to prove it. Now, as mentioned above, there is no play for your money. I go through hundred dollar bills like they're toilet paper. This past year has been the worst. Sure some machines do hit but everyone is crying about how tight they are. We're playing less because I'm not going to give a casino my bank account. So what happens now is that our host is giving us less. We still get our weekend rooms, but now suddenly we're not getting our meals automatically. We've NEVER had to pay for food and now suddenly we have to beg for a buffet meal? We've gone to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods and the machines there seem to be looser, but the smoke is vile. You walk into the casino and it's like walking into a smoke screen.

We haven't been to AC since September, and we're not going back until Christmas. In the meantime I play for free online and I get to keep my money close to my heart instead of giving it to casino.

The fact is that they are tighten up the slots i would come down and spend 1G and double it,but able to give the casino's back a profit, but I have stopped going to Balley's because all i was doing is putting money in without (1) hit, and i also hit a big one but they said it was a tilt, or malfunction I complanined to the Commission (2) times with negative results, though I observed the Tech. working on the machine the next day and when they saw me they locked it up and left. with that in mind they lost a steady customer. I only go there now and Pass through I refuse to play from the problems they caused.

Been to The Hollywood casino. ONLY 2000 slots. NO hotel rooms. Buffet was OK but would not go there for that. In 2 hours we say it all with NO place to go.

IN AC Harrahs alone has over 6000 slots and hundreds of table games. Ballys 5,400 slots and ALL the casinos have 5 STAR Hotel rooms, pools, spa, Shows dozens of eating places.

You can keep Hollwood casino. I still say as much as I do not like AC there is NO comparing what they have to offer compared to any casino in PA.. Have not been to AC in over a year but still getting room and food comps from Bally's.

Okay, so I really didn't believe it cause I've been doing well. I went to the Taj Mahal and played on Jackpot Party. I chose it after emailing the site I mentioned and asking if they had any new recommendations. Joseph at ACSlotGuide ( www.acslotguide.com ) said Jackpot Party has been paying well.

Well, its a penny machine, and I put $50 in. I played 75 cents per spin and ended up in the bonus rounds more times than I could count. I ended up turning that $50 into just over $300. I'd say that is a well paying machine. I think you just need to pick the right ones? Plus, my comps were outrageous from just playing that machine - I ate dinner for free, and even got cash back from my play.
