Once again people with disabilities take the hit. Governor Blagojevich recently cut $10 million dollars in the budget from the DHS Home Services Program. Thousands of people with disabilities rely on this program for their independence. This program's in home services are largely provided by personal assistants for some 30,000 Illinois residents with disabilities. Home Services enables many people with disabilities to live independently in the community; to go to school, work, to become contributing tax payers, to live with dignity. Without the assistance of a personal assistant, people in the Home Services Program would be at risk of nursing home placement, which costs the state twice as much money and independence is taken away. A huge portion of our population is aging and I am not hearing an outcry for more nursing homes. Actually, "aging in place" is the buzz phrase on the streets. To do this, "community options" must be made available. People's lives, independence and the right to live in a community of choice are not "pork". Please call or email your State Representatives TODAY. Tell them to override the Governor's veto, restore the funding for the Home Services Program to the amount approved by the General assembly in the budget they passed.
