They come through here wanting me to sign to put most of my land in the floodplain. I didn't sign and called lawyer McCollum. He said if I signed I would be letting the government tell me what to do with my land. If the government decided it was a certain type of floodplain I couldn't even plant my own land. They won't let you build nothing on it, not even a shed. I'm glad I didn't sign. My family has made a living off of this farm for 3 generations. The governement keeps adding more and more regulations making it harder and harder for a family run farm. I didn't sign but according to the lawyer they can come in and declare it a floodplain and there is nothing you can do.

The mayor's hands were tied on the floodplain issue. He couldn't do anything but sign on to what the Corps of Engineers reported. Part of the town's property is in a low area but it is not classified as floodplain.
The Army Corps of Engineers determine where the floodplain is. If your house or business is in a floodplain you have to carry Flood Insurance. Let me repeat, you have to carry Flood Insurance. Your regular homeowners or business insurance won't cover any water or flood damage.
They also have what is known as a "hundred year floodplain" which means that about once in 100 years a terrible flood might come and wash away everything in it's path. It would be the highest flood waters recorded. A lot of homes and businesses around Marshville might be in the 100 year floodplain. You don't have to have flood insurance as long as you are not in the regular floodplain. It is optional if you are in the 100 year but not in the regular.
