Point Reyes Station: Late-summer idyll

Full story: The Reporter

There is nothing, really -- other than a series of dairy farms here and there along state Route 1 or along any number of roads leading to and from Petaluma -- to announce that you are near Point Reyes Station as you motor toward it.

Point Reyes Station is a hotbed of socialism and communism in redwood hot tub county, north of Frisco. All you have there are Hippies that haven't grown up yet and a Coast Guard base. Two useless entities.

Oh, and Cafe Reyes sux - unless one likes tofu, lemon grass and oysters on their pizza.

I absolutely love Point Reyes. They have a great used book store, a hardware store with cool stuff and a Pulitzer prize winning newspaper.
Finish your day at the Point Reyes Lighthouse.

Vacaville has a better hardware store with cooler stuff. Pacific (Ace) Hardware on Merchant.

Our town used to have 3 used bookstores and 2 new bookstores; one at the outlet mall and and another, Crown Superstore, where Pier One is now near Safeway. The bookstore at Pt. Reyes Station is closing. There used to be two but people either don't seem to read anymore or are buying their books through amazon.com or alibris.com via the Internet.

Hopefully, the VV Borders store survives the recession and stays in business.

OH, NO!! It's closing? That bookstore has always been one of the highlights of my trips there. My daughter and I have spent hours in that store! What a shame!
I know about the bookstore problem here. I hear Borders may close.
Yes, I love Pacific Hardware! I always go to their kitchen section where one can find anything! It's also a great place to buy gifts.
Few people are aware that the clerks will gift wrap.

Wow, sad existence pal, no free love for you!

Did you not think to ask for cold beer and oysters on the half shell at the pizzeria? And deep fried tofu is edible, slightly.

The only good use for oysters is fish bait. Quite obvious that dictum has never suffered from paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP)which is quite common with West Marin oysters and mussels.

Nope, don't drink beer. Wine only at New Years Eve. And pizza isn't any good unless it's made at the source in a mom & pop pizzaria in New York or Naples, Italy. Certainly not at Point Reyes Station, Olema, Stinson Beach or Marshal where half the crap thrown on a pizza is unidentifiable and which the quality is highly doubtful.

Nope, the body is a temple of the spirit and therefore, I am damn careful of what goes into that body. Organic non-fat plain yogurt, fresh fruit, ripe bananas and on occasion, a glass of red wine.

Are you sure you're not talking about Bolinas?
That place is downright scary....I took my daughter to a cafe there when she was about 10 and the waitress who started serving us was so cranked up she could not keep her head still and her bulging eyeballs kept circling and darting toward the ceiling.
My daughter was so upset we left. It was kind of hard answering "Mommy, what's wrong with that lady?"

Nope, never could find the town of Bolinas as the town residents kept tearing down the road sign from HWY 1. Figured that a place like that had something bad to hide and not worth seeing.

Yep! I think the Dept. of Trans. finally stopped putting up a sign. Anyway, if you're ever curious, it's the right turn before the road ends at the rocky beach.

Well that explains a lot...about my temple anyway.
Got any spare mortar and brick?

And no I haven't had the pleasure of PSP but do follow the seasonal rules. So far very good, nothing like BBQ'd bivalves w/ a dash of lime and some tapatia.

The bookstore is not closing. It is quite alive and well! Pt. Reyes Books regularly has great author events.

you obviously have your point reyes station eateries confused... there's a new restaurant in p.r.s., osteria stellina, that's taking a stab at "artisan" pizzas complete with oysters, stinging nettles, etc. as topping choices.
cafe reyes, on the other hand, offers authentic neapolitan style pizza baked in a wood fire oven they imported from naples. they also use caputo 00 flour, san marzano tomatoes, a starter imported from naples to leaven their dough and very simple, fresh ingredients of the highest quality. it's the best pizza in the bay area as far as i'm concerned. so you should check your facts before you post...

In Point Reyes Station, if you have to ask the price of something, then you really shouldn't be there. Stay in Petaluma or Santa Rosa instead.

Pt Reyes Station is what Len Augustine and Beehive want Vacaville to become - an upscale world class destination for the rich and famous.

Neva happen!
