The new show "Coal" on Spike TV started March 30. This is a reality show filmed at Cobalt Mine in Westchester, West Virginia.

Do you think this type of show will help the industry by showing the world all the difficulties in mining and all the dangers the miners must face day to day. OR.....do you think the outsiders will look down on the miners as dirty and uneducated?

Will this bring more focus on safety inspections or will it help promote alternate energy sources?

What do you think?

Hard to say. Look at other shows like Deadliest Catch, Ax Men, Black Gold, etc for clues. I was surprised at how "flat" the first episode was. Seems like they might want to introduce a surface mining crew somewhere else just like Ax Men shows different types of logging.

Yeah your right. Mix it up with other outfits. I highly doubt Massey will want to be on a t.v. series. Shoot they already have one, the local news

I completely agree! I think that introducing other types of mining would benefit the show. I had never watched Ax Men until recently, but I really enjoy the fact that there is a variety of logging techniques that fill the block of time that it's on. Unfortunately, I missed the majority of the first episode of Coal, but I definitely plan on watching it online when it becomes available.
I'm interested to see where the show goes as it progresses.

The thing is, it's an interesting area, full of interesting people. For the show to have some impact, it's going to have to be a little more than the owners pushing the miners to get more loads.

Yeah, I left the area a long time ago and was hoping they would spend a little more time setting up the show by talking about the history of coal mining in WV. I just love that show Ax Men. It's interesting and entertaining and I really was hoping for something along those lines.

I'm still located in the area & am a proud granddaughter of a coal miner. I think that the show is a great thing for West Virginia, but I'm also worried that, although the show is interesting and sheds a new light on coal mining, it's going to give others the opportunity to bash WV. This is the last thing that I want to see---coal miners risk their lives every time they put their name tag on the board and go underground. I really hope that the show benefits the industry by shedding that new light and opening the eyes of those who don't know/love a coal miner.

I agree. I hope they don't do a hatchet job. There waw a show on called Black Gold last year about roughnecks and oil driling. That was kind of a hatchet job and a lot of it was staged. I hope they don't do the same with this show.

Me, too. I never really got the chance to watch Black Gold, but I've heard that it wasn't what it was cracked up to be. I hope that they keep this show as real as the coal mines are---it is a very dangerous job and I think that all coal miners deserve respect and appreciation for what they do. I just hope that everyone else sees it that way, too.

I hope it has a positive impact on the industry. I come from a long line of miner's and people associated with the industry and I am very proud of our miner's. They do the jobs no one else wants. If you have never been to an underground mine then you don't know and will never know what it is like to work in this type of environment. I rode with my husband one time to make a delivery to one we called the pit (you literally drive into a pit with nothing around you but about 400 ft of cliff) and it is unreal once you are down there. It is extremely hot. It has fans that blow to help keep it cool but outside those fans it is like smoldering. I give a big hooray to the miners that deal with this on a daily basis.

"Coal" has the exact same producer as "deadliest catch". Black Gold was a joke. Fully scripted. The "catch" was never scripted. From what I read months ago,"Coal" will NOT be scripted either. MTR would not fly as a TV show, because 99% of people that see a beautiful God created West Virginia mountain being blasted to rubble wouldn't be entertained.

I enjoyed the show as far as the work in the mine. The part that turned me off was the part where the owners kept whining about production it reminded me of two other reality shows Full Throttle Saloon and Gold Rush. I just think the show should be more focused on the mining than the owners, I will bet you money that the owners are being paid very well for the filming privelages.
