Let me assure you we are not out to destroy PVH. We want to improve it. It needs a lot of improvement. Let's start with some of the mildest stuff first. It seems like the Board and Administrators and Management there have a lot to hide and don't want to admit to. A few hundred of us got to read all of the TAMMY/KAREN posts that were all quickly deleted from Topix by PVH. While I don't agree at all with the one offensive sentence in one post, the rest seems to have hit home and their speed in deleting it all seems like a pretty obvious admission of guilt and accountability for some really bad decisions and judgment.

Again, starting with the mildest; how can PVH continue to increase its revenues each year by millions of dollars in hiked-up fees, when it serves a market with the highest unemployment rate in the state, a market that continues to shrink each year in population, a market that has one of the lowest per capita incomes in the state, and a market that seems to persistently and continuously have horrible issues affecting a disproportionate number of its physicians at any given time----and I know that PVH will try to say it serves a sicker population than other hospitals in the state, or an older population, or both, and it will try to say it has greatly expanded its market which just isn't true. How can you keep admitting the same patients over and over and over and ordering the same tests over and over and over; and still have no real empirical evidence, no objective, substantive proof; that health care is better or outcomes are better or QUALITY OF CARE is better, even though the costs keep going up and up at a rate more than double the annual inflation rate for pretty much every year PVH has existed. We intend to ask HCCRA, WVHA, WVMS, the AG, the U.S. Attorney, the CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY, and every kind of third party payer in our state that very same question. CAMC tried the WE SERVE A SICKER POPULATION argument back in the late nineties; and an Ivy League epidemiologist blew that argument out of the water in no time flat.
Don't worry though, Tom, on your advice to all of us in your fiftieth PVH anniversary speech, we are scrimping on the paper towels in the bathroom so you can still have your 3 day weekends at the fancy resorts. The Register and Topix should insist on reposting the Thread that was deleted, so EVERYONE can see what it is that PVH feared so much would be read by anyone on Topix. Sure sign of fear and guilt PVH.

Not a good career move. Tom taught us that. Can't be open or honest or direct with PVH administration, and that is a dangerous situation in a hospital. You would just fire us or sue us, or both, and get a gag order or discredit us and call us disgruntled employees and blow it off. Getting all the comments deleted on the Tammy and Karen Topic is a perfect example. Too much TRUTH for PVH to handle and be made Public knowledge. Sad is one word that applies though, you are right about that, no matter how brown your nose is.

Brown nose, I think not. If you don't like it, and don't feel comfortable being honest about your situation, then look for another job. Sounds like they do not have the best interest of the hospital as a priority. Good luck

No. The whole thing was a scam and a set-up like the entrapment thing for Hugh, only this time it backfired and lots of people got on it and asked a lot of very embarrassing questions of Tom, Tammy, and the BOARD. Questions they will not answer truthfully. If you think Chris Cuomo got excited over the story of bullying on Topix; wait to see how ABC handles the right of FREEDOM OF SPEECH being trampled on locally. These are public figures running a publicly owned hospital and getting paid big bucks to do it. They have all acted as spokespersons on important matters to the public, matters dealing with millions of dollars of public funds. They are just as much a legitimate subject of criticism as Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. If we can publicly question the extracurricular activity of our president and other elected, public officials, then surely we can do the same with the public figures who run our community owned hospital. Their honesty, their ability, their trustworthiness, their character, and their integrity are all fair game to question in the management and spending of over seventy million dollars a year of public funds. If this gets deleted, a lot of important people will be wondering why. We will get to the stuff that has already been deleted, and a whole lot more later.
As preparation for that, get every educated and influential person you know to start viewing this site and doing a routine search in the search box for PVH and read every word. If you see things getting deleted pertaining to PVH, call it to the attention of Amy's attorney and the chief investigative reporter at the Charleston Gazette. In the meantime, do a search for an article that ran in the Charleston Gazette on April 4, 2012. It was an AP article by RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR. Also, those of you who are smart enough to do an intelligent search and find the article, might want to proceed to www.choosingwisely.org to further educate yourself for some of what is to come.

After reading the article and browsing the web site I have to say I don't get it at all. If people have gone to the same Dr. and the same hospital for years and don't get a diagnosis or get any better after the same old tests over and over and the same old treatments over and over; why not try an alternative? There are excellent doctors and hospitals less than an hour away at Thomas Mem. and Cab. Hunt. and St. Mary's. It is not like you have no other choices. Heck. There is even Holzer right across the river. Are we all in some kind of rut or trance that won't allow us to do that? A lot of people in this country would love to have a KDMC only about. 90 minutes away. Excellent alternatives close by.

Since PVH is a not for profit hospital than why do they always make a profit and honestly people if the doctors were any good would they be here in Pt. Pleasant in a little tiny hospital who can't keep a good doctor because administration fears the intelligent ones?? There are many examples of "good" doctors who have left the hospital because of the administration. I am not saying that there are not some "good" doctors at PVH because there are...but talking about traveling to Huntington to go the doctor that is absurd to have to travel an hour to go the Emergency room or to see a family physician, improvements need to be made. Also what is this with this new policy that is going into effect in November that won't allow the doctors there to write any prescriptions for patients with chronic pain that is justified, and I am not talking about the ones that just get it because they complain about back pain (not saying back pain isn't real, so please don't jump on a bandwagon of bashing me for using that as an example) I know of many people who are now going to have to go to pain clinics for the prescriptions that are justified. Is there some new law that has gone into effect or is this just PVH's way of trying to "fix" the drug problem in this area. The problem with this is not all people are addicts or sell their medications and thanks to the ones who do, those who don't will have to spend out more money, travel further and go through a bunch of tests that they have already had just to have "quality of life", and being a nurse I know pain is real for some and this is very confusing to me. I am just wondering if anyone out there has a straight answer on this topic because I hate to see people who truly have pain be put through this kind of nonsense to maintain a quality of life because some doctors have over prescribed and so many people get prescriptions that are not justified and cause the ones who do have true medical issues more inconveniences in their lives. Just wondered if anyone could answer my questions, it just seems odd that this policy about the pain medications goes into effect at the same time as the non-smoking policy on the PVH campus, and yes this time it is supposed to include employees (the smoking part)...can anyone answer this for me?

Here is what has probably already happened---Tom and the board have frantically and forcefully communicated with all of these agencies, and more, like the West Virginia Board of Ethics and the Consumer Protection Agency; and offered Tom's tactic and strategy of adopting his corn-pone personna, and offering the equivalent of him looking at the ground, shuffling his feet, and saying; Aw, shucks, Mister; if we have done anything wrong, we sure are sorry. Come on in and take a look at us and we will apologize and pay our fine and try to not let it happen again. Unbelievably, this has worked for him in the past, even with Medicare. No more, Tom. This time they saw you coming and were anticipating and expecting your attempts at preemptive manipulation. It will be viewed as arrogant, manipulative, condescending, and presumptive. They will give you the responses you want to hear and are accustomed to; but PVH has already been on the radar for a while, and you will look foolish and even more guilty to all of them with such lame, preemptive attempts. What they would like to say to you, but won't, is; We don't NEED your humble INVITATION to look at everything at PVH; it is our job and our right and our OBLIGATION to the PUBLIC.
It will take a while. Even with the newest programming and applications and cross-checking software, tracking and trending of mountains of information, so to speak, will take time. Identifying similar markets with similar demographics and health grades served by similar sized hospitals will take less time. Comparables are just one effective way to look at hospitals. Similar hospitals with very high rankings and grades and outcomes measurements help to set a reasonable standard of expectations and reasonable and accepted standards of care. Your country-boy tactics trying to run a li'l ol' country hospital the best you can simply will not work this time Tom. They already see you coming.
