Just wondering if people with OH license plates but live in WV bothers any one else? As a tax payer it is not fair for me to pay property taxes and them get a free pass. Don't try and hide behind a business in Ohio. If the city wanted more money then they would show up at the local city schools at drop off and pick up times. I think as a resident of WV you have only 6 months to change you license.

Several years ago I was a police officer this was addressed... At that time the apartments off of 12th street were fairly new and also it was just after WV passed the law requiring you to have a minimum amount of auto insurance that OH at the time didn't require.

Just a quick drive through the different apartment complexes revealed that easily at least half the vehicles regularly seen had OH registration plates. I can't say how it is now but then WV Code required WV plates "immediately on residency"... When we asked WV DMV to define "residency" they said "when you hang your clothes in the closet you're a resident of the state." We then went through several weeks of concentrated enforcement and got good results.

If I'm not mistaken OH now has the insurance requirement just as WV does but there is still one BIG reason for running OH plates. Once you pay taxes for a vehicle in OH that's the end of it... There is no yearly personal property tax like in WV.

Anyone purposely doing what you describe is not only breaking the law but also cheating the county and state of tax $$... It's unfair to those that live here and abide by the law, period. The sad thing is it's not hard to enforce the law and make things right... As to why it's not... Your guess is as good as mine.

Most of the Ohio tags we see here in WV are on cars that belong to business people and it is wrong we have to pay tax and they get the benefits, this should be stopped but seems no one has the guts to make things right.

Sad part its the people that own high dollar vehicles also!! Guess they think that they are above the law and the working man should have to pay for the roads for them!! Another thing I like is when the city workers use the city vehicles for their personal business!! Look at Wal-Mart on a Saturday/Sunday and you will see a bunch of city cars there! I feel sorry for the garbage ma! He has to drive the garbage truck to Wal-mart to get food!! and it hard to park!! LOL LOL

I don't know anything about that but will say this much... Keep in mind I a talking of how things were 25 - 30 years ago and with all the changes in the laws in respect to personal rights, privacy, etc... Then there was a policy of standards that were to be adhered to in respect to the officer's conduct, character, etc.. And it applied 24/7, working or off. Heck... If you wanna get down to it an officer found to be involved in any sort of extramarital activity is guilty of unbecoming conduct and face disciplinary action. I can remember at least two that were terminated for violation of that policy. One was fired when it was found he was involved in the use of marijuana. The other was fired for not meeting financial obligations... Months past due rent payments, maybe defaulted on a car loan and had his car repossessed. If the officer is knowingly violating the law I would have to consider that an issue that should result in disciplinary action. I don't know if the Sheriff's Dept has such a policy but if it doesn't then it should.

My personal opinion is that a police officer should be required to adhere to such a policy... If they refuse then they need to find another job... But as I said... That's my opinion and you know what they say about opinions... They're just like belly buttons... Just 'bout everybody's got one...

That's something I personally have not seen... There is something I question in respect to employees on any level of government... City, county, state, etc... Are those that take government vehicles home... And that is any employee or elected official... Reporting the use of said vehicle on their income taxes???

If not then I believe there are violations of both state and federal income taxes. And that applies whether just going to and from work or using the vehicle for personal reasons.

Well these people that drive cars with Ohio tags! Found the loop hole in the law. Yes they live in WV and drive cars with Ohio tags. Yes the pay rent on apartments in WV mainly Pt. Pleasant. But the cars they drive. They have in there parents or other family members name. There for WV law can't touch them because the vehicle isn't in there name. Yes it sucks I agree 100% but the real sad part is. These same peole with Ohio tags on there vehicles draw a check from welfare!!!

West Virginia taxes everything cars, homes, atvs, dogs, trees, etc. It's no wonder some people try to get around paying personal property taxes on cars by putting Ohio tags on them. But since gas is already 3.55 a gal most people won't even be able to afford to drive there cars anyways.

In simple terms it is like this, for example if a state needs 1000 dollars to operate and business is booming then the business pay most of the taxes. Or in a round about way the consumer does with buying their product or services. Business leaves or goes under the state still needs 1000 dollars to operate. So we have 100 people ,the state taxes the people 10 dollars each. The state still operates. Then 500 people of the 1000 leave state. State still needs 1000 dollars to operate now state taxes 20 dollars each to operate. 250 of the 500 people leave, still need to operate so state taxes 40 dollars to operate. This could go on forever.LOL In order not to be taxed to death we need business and economic growth! Also we need the tax money we are losing from the illegal OHIO tags!!!

The sheriff of Mason County receives a % of all taxes collected, if he could stage one officer at each school in the county and one at each appartment complex in Point Pleasant Camp Conley, behind foodland and Pleasant valley and ticket every car with an ohio tag he would rake in so much money in fines and taxes it would be worth his time.. and FAIR to the whole county..

for all of you posting mind your business enjoy the ohio tags they will not cover you for ever

I can't go against your analogy... If it takes $XX to run the state they're gonna get it either way... It's just the less revenue sources there are the more each source is gonna pay...

Not unlike years ago when WV taxed food and OH didn't. Those that lived close to OH would buy groceries in OH to avoid paying WV food taxes. By doing so those that don't live close to OH pay a little more to offset or make up for the WV residents that shop in OH...
