Three of the first megawatt industrial wind turbines installed in Massachusetts and Rhode Island have catastrophic gear box failures. The Portsmouth High School ,Rhode Island - Princeton ,Massachusetts -Otis Air force Base ,Cape Cod ,Massachusetts all have millions of dollars in damage . The cost to keep these commercial turbines operating could go as high as one million every three years and these were the first turbines .
The FL-1577 started operating on 02 Dec 2009. Regarding the FL-1577 gearbox. We noticed some metal flakes in the gearbox oil this past January and had a borescope inspection done. The inspection showed pitting of the gear teeth caused by pressing the metal flakes between the teeth. The problem component in the gearbox appears to be a bearing.
Based on Fuhrlaender's recommendation, we are continuing to run the wind turbine.
We are working on procuring a new gearbox that has a different/better bearing.
As a key failure point, gearbox reliability continues to dog the wind industry. Its a dirty little secret !

You never get bad news about these wind turbines! They say it could cost up to a million bucks every three years to replace parts in the machine and 150 thousand for a special crane
