all you hear now days about school is what the students can't do. How about what they need to do in order to get their education. The parents doesn't say anything when the kids screw up
it is someone else fault. The students aren't made to respect the teachers that has spent alot of time and money to get their education in order to teach them. They are humans too.believe me if you wait until you are older and try to get your G E D it isn't easy you don't remember what you do when you're young.just think about this take time and appricate the teachers and the time you have to study

Why are you discussing this on topix? Do you just enjoy slamming the school system or stirring up junk? Are you trying to see how many people you can get "on your side". This is pathetic. Seriously....why do you not just handle it in the appropriate manner and go have a discussion with the school administrator? You can surely get some answers that way, and share your opinions with them. Is that too hard?
I get so sick of people like you, who get on topix and bash others who are writing on topix. You yourself are obviously on here commenting and expressing your opinion about what someone else is doing, while bashing someone else for expressing their own opinion. Its called a hypocrite! My school age child is only in kindergarten, so im not yet faced with this crap, but i do know that i would be pissed if my kids got in school suspension for sitting there and minding their own business. My mom is a teacher, and even she doesn't agree with a lot of the nonsense that public school systems are doing. Most of it doesn't help the kids...they are only helping themselves, and mostly worried about how much money they can bring in.

Its not the teachers they are bashing, its actually this whole no child left behind bull crap. The government is doing things to our school systems that they really have no right to. Did you know that you could actually teach them at home and they could probably learn faster and easier. Because the government is telling the teachers how to teach everything and even when to teach it. But yet one thing about it most of us are smarter than our government and we learned the old fashioned way.

Maybe the teacher is trying to prevent those several hundred kids who come to the study hall with nothing to do or perhaps with only a notebook. The I'm going to draw statement is code for ... I want to sit and talk to my friends and those )*&)(*_O* teachers aren't going to tell me what to do. If your kid really wants to draw or write stories have them do this. Come to study hall with their math book and a notebook. Tell them to open the math book on thiir desk and then draw to their hearts content in the notebook. As long as they are really drawing and not sitting and talking and being disruptive, no one will notice or care. But if they are doing as I suspect and disturbing class they need to bring a frigging book and study. God forbid reading or learning anything at school what is the world coming to.

Parents for PJHS would be happy to help you with all your parental concerns about student activities and creative outlets. Study hall remains a time for doing homework, reading, and drawing. Some students are told to get their work finished, before they draw, because they are the same students who consistently show up to class without their homework.(Maybe you should spend more time worrying about them being successful students and getting their homework done, rather than getting on here and griping about something you have not even approached the school about.)

Also, football players in PJHS are held to the same standards as other students. Coaches at PJHS will look a player in the face and tell them if they don't have their homework finished, there is no need to show up at practice. Thank goodness there are faculty and staff that care about the futures of these students. The coaches and study hall teacher do not have any repercussions for poor test scores, they simply care about the kids meeting their potential. KUDOS TO PJHS!

The school provides many opportunities to be creative: Spectrum Program, YES Program, Odyssey of the Mind Program, & many more. If they want to draw, it's called ART class.

Pocahontas Junior High School is no longer allowing the students in study hall to draw, write or do anything other than read a book or do school work! this is taking the creativity out of the students. kids are getting In-School Suspension for Expressing themselves in there free time!!! If there done with thier work and want to draw they should be allowed as long as it is decent! schools are suposed to influence creativity not DENY it! or punish them for drawing. This may be relaxing or calming to a child. this will lead to NOTHING BUT TROUBLE!
Study hall is not free time, if they are done with their homework they should be reading their school books.

They have never allowed them draw! Never!
You should see how bad the In school teacher treats the kids! Mary Leader. She is always yelling at kids. If they are in ISS she torments them all day, making most of them cry. I've gotten five days of In-school just for exiting the 7th grade hallway when school let out, instead of the main exit! It was closer to my bus, but apparently I was being defiant.
I believe Pocahontas school didn't benefit me, so I dropped out the last week of October and got my GED on the first week on November. I'm glad I dropped out and I do not regret it. People lie all the time saying everyone will regret it. But I start college soon and I'm happy.

so you think its OK to study history, or perhaps do geometry problems in study hall? But, its not OK to study art, or do some freehand sketches.....

Honestly I can see the point in not allowing drawing. I believe in allowing creativity for children and teens. However, the things that most kids draw are not appropriate. Drawing inappropriate subject matters is often the case. You may not know the full story and the punishment that the school is administering may be harsh. Reading and working on homework is a good thing to do while in study hall.
