The city wants our money to build the pool complex. They most likely want to swap the Hamburger tax for a city sales tax so the money can be spent legally for this. Makes you want to go hmmmmm. Attend the community meetings at the Community Center on July 24 and speak your wishes.

They may find that the tax burden is getting excessive and that people will do business elsewhere.
I would like to know just what is going to be in the proposed pool complex and what the fees will be for its use.
They need votes so the community meeting is to gain support. People need to show up.

duh! we CAN blame the city council when they don't listen to us peed-ons.
dressing rooms and little pool are likely shot but what's wrong with the present big pool? need to go minimum on spending and repairs if possible - not new cadillac. gym roof and floor that bad? maybe repair for another 10-20 yrs vs new. same with big pool and ballfield stuff? aren't we broke right now?
are old tax moneys being spent where they were dedicated? roads and sidewalks? we built any new sidewalks in 15 yrs?
have rotary build their amphitheatre at the park vs the river. pretty sure the city can use hamburgler tax for different stuff if its dedicated in the ballot.

Nope, the hamburger tax is pass or fail at the ballot -not allocated at the ballot. The law specifies how the hamburger tax is to be spent. The amphitheater is Rotary and it will not be at the river but will be at the park.

as is city ordinance hamburgler tax = ap funds.
not positive, but think council may be able to do an ordinance and tie it to bonds.

people ballot vote is different -
"(b) When the electors of any city levy a gross receipts tax on hotels and restaurants, and the ballot dedicates the tax for the development, construction, and maintenance of city parks, the proceeds of the tax shall not be deposited into the city advertising and promotion fund but shall be deposited into a special fund to be used for the development, construction, and maintenance of city parks. The funds shall be disbursed by the mayor upon approval of the city council."

getting enough fees is important. folks will use the gym and pool for cheap daycare at city/taxpayer expense if you let them.

the big pool is cracked and and falling apart. There's not enough lanes for the swim team and it doesn't hold any were close 233 people. We do need a bigger big pool

wasn't aware it had to hold 233 people. has there been that many folks in that pool at once?
don't they make pool liners or something to fix/cover cracks? 25k vs 250k
less lanes = few more races/heats?

we're not the size of paragould, batesville, mtn home, etc. we should be happy with a chevy. new cadillacs are nice, but expensive.
why not just build 4 pool complexes. north south east west so a few hundred can swim a few months. it's only money.

yes there has been several times where there has been pretty close to that amount. Maybe not during the day but at pool parties they cut it close. More lanes mean less heats so the meet is over quicker.
No they can not just "simply" lay more putty or whatever to fill the cracks because that putty becomes very slippery when wet, hence more chance for someone to fall and hurt themselves and with the people in Pocahontas they would sue the city for not keeping the pool up to FDA standards. And weather they decide to build a new pool or not the pool we have no will be shut down due to the fact that they don't mead certain criteria. So yes we need a new pool.
what

exactly what certain criteria? FDA =?

odd that just now, all of a sudden, it's not up to snuff?

sounds like a scare tactic that could probably be easiy fixed.

We need a new pool but we don't have the money for this elaborate pool they are wanting to build. This is Joe Grider's dream for the Aqua Dolphins.

The pool will close after this summer. It no longer is up to code. Why do y'all think the country club ripped up their pool an rebuilt everything. Same problem. New standards. Either you want your kids to have a pool or you can join the club. That will cost more than the new tax though. I for on e would like to see an indoor pool so I could swim laps all year for exercise. I'm not as young as I once was and running is out of the question.
what

code and new standards? what's changed? link?

there are lot's of things i'd like to see, but i don't think the city owes it to me nor we can afford it. simply disagree with taxing all of us for the wishful benefit of a couple hundred.

wish list of $6 million is crazy. where does it stop with govt spending OUR money! cadillac recreation projects dreamed up by architects for a small minority should be at the bottom of the list.

How did they build the community center? Mayor Patrick was the one. We might need to get him on as one of the leaders to build the POOL PARK. Its a lot of money we are talking about here folks and Pocahontas CAN NOT afford. Right now you do not have the right people to get this thing off the ground. You need someone that knows where the money is and sources. Like i said John Patrick who made it possible on the CC. Need to ask, him how he did it? So they can have a beginning//// with not a high price. Do you think im made out of money.

if the city pool was a private business their doors would have already been shut down because of lack of revenue....
