I got this weeks issue of the POKY Star Herald , this paper has completely degenerated!
THe letter to the editor contained the usual one sided political rant against Republicans from the local liberal crazy ( you got to expect that since that old lady editor wouldn't even admit that Keith Sutton was running for State representative!
But the topper was the Story of the Dalton Ladies Garden Club meeting! 2 whole columns of tripe!
I am waiting for them to report just who's toilet doesn't flush or just why Anne's son got the job as the county historian .
I still have a subscription but I am going to let it run out since this worthless rag of a paper continues not to report all the important local news.
As an example it Never did report about the Jones lawsuit that the county had to pay for .

aint that the truth. when they do write an article about something its usually only half the story or half wrong. the things people really want to no about are never covered. court news doesnt have everyones name in it that was in court that day. how do they pick those? i never could find out what time the parade started but read several articles about it. there could be alot more school events covered too instead of just the football & basketball stuff. when there is a fundraiser for someone i wish they would give a few more details as to what happened to the person. i think alot more people would contribute to the cause if they knew what it was. if space is the problem they could take out things like what happened 24+ yrs ago & a few other useless things. thats one reason gossip & rumors are so bad around here. the only way to find out about an accident or any other newsworthy event is to talk to someone else or ask on topix & see what they heard cause it wont be in the paper.

Why would they want to put "news" in a newspaper? Poky just doesn't want the truth spread around, its better to think they have total control of the info. The old "head in the sand" attitude works great here. We all know how "aunt Ethel" make a quilt but how many know how many houses were broken into and how much property has stolen in this area last month? People out in the county are angry and talking about maybe its time for a new sheriff.

Not wanting to start an argument but where I live we don't have a local newspaper anymore.
At one time we had 2 local newspapers and as the town changed they disappeared. What was going on in my town was high levels of crime and since the town went from mostly white people to mostly black our information was cut off. To racial I guess.
The only information we get now is from newspapers from other towns and very little about my town.
Then the next step was to change the frequencies of the police scanners so the criminals could not pick up the police calls.
That leaves us with very little knowledge of what's happening in our town, well what's left of our town.
You don't have to always agree with what you read and that is your right but not having any paper other than the Jonesboro is not good.
I want to know what's happening in my town and we don't have that any more.

I often wonder what ever happened to journalist? Or reporters persay. For instance, say there is a story that has to do with an argument over a problem with 2 neighbors. A journalist would interview both neighbors and tell both sides of the story and let the reader see which one seems to be in the right and maybe even help come up with a solution to the problem. Or any story - that was just an example. Or say when there is something they want to do in town like put something new in - go around and interview people in the neighborhood and ask what the average Joe thinks about it. Not just put it to a vote, find out what people really think. There are people who, for whatever reason, can't go to certain meetings to decide things, ask those people their thoughts, ideas etc. Oh well just thinking out loud I guess. I just wondered whatever happened to journalist and reporters. Another thing, although I am sure it's not important to a lot of people lol, is the recipe section of the paper. Used to the lady that did that column used to travels to people's houses and get actual recipes and post them. Now all you ever see is how to make a cake for a special occasion. It's just nothing like it used to be.
Ok I'm finished lol

I think you posted an interesting comment. I was trying to point out any newspaper is better than no newspaper unless it is so one sided that it only presents one side of an issue like some of the news media.

The publisher is an old biddy that provides only the news she wants to be printed , it's usually one sided and she censures it to protect her Good Old boys club.
You won't hardly ever find anything negative about a Baltz in the paper as an example of her protecting a family .
Ever notice that the Quorum court meetings are also written in a way to protect them .
Just who on that court actually voted to INCREASE THE MILLEAGE ON PROPERTY TAXES!

You must be a Republican. That means you are either rich or stupid. The letter was pretty much right on. Did you not notice that the Republican Senate voted down Obamas 'payroll tax reduction'? That means if you work for a living your taxes are going up. They admitted that it would help stimulate the economy, but the billionaires would have to pay more. Heaven forbid! It's your money, stupid.

You must be a Republican. That means you are either wealthy or stupid. The letter was pretty much right on. Did you not know that the Republican Senate voted down Obamas payroll tax breaks? That means if you work for a living your taxes are going up. They admitted it would help stimulate the economy but the billionaires would have to pay more taxes. Heaven forbid! One thing a "newspaper" could do is go to the courthouse and get a list of unpaid fines. It would suprise most because of who's on the list. There are several thousands of unpaid fines.
Now here is an example of good police work in this county.
Last an old guy almost 70 who is in bad health and cuts a little wood to help make ends meet. He was gone for a short while hauling a load of wood and when he came back he noticed some one had stolen his Yamaha 4 wheeler. He called the sheriff's office and they showed up to make a report (that in its self is rare). The old man had followed the tracks down the gravel road showing where the 4 wheeler had gone. While filling out the report the deputy found the old man had an unpaid traffic ticket, so he arrested the guy and took him to jail. Its like to hell with the 4 wheeler, wouldn't want to actually catch someone stealing something (might be a friend). Next day the cops came back but couldn't follow the tracks, the traffic had covered them. So another crime goes unsolved and unreported in the newspaper.

We have not bought paper since Cracker Barrell became Mayor and hired Scott Baltz. Then didnt publish a public matter regarding FLSA violations, EPA violations, Lawsuits, Mayor Cracker Cracking up his car and hiding it behind Police Station because he ran out in front of a woman. Mayor Cracker moving out of city and continueing to lie to us about residency and using a apartment on town square as a cover for his residence. Why not keep this transparent? Many other issues, We dont like this paper anymore. Very sad.Shame on our paper. They know they are wrong. You folks just read topix and continue to listen to friends and family, word of mouth and make informed decisions. What ever we do, We must get out and vote and vote last minute, not early. Let them sweat some. On election night if you hear Joe Grider and Tim Scott say " folks wait, we have a problem" and it lasts for 30 min. Be suspect. They may be constipated due to the Lucky losers are not winning and They need time to do some recounts. Where is our paper? TEA

HEAR HEAR....Rumor is the Sheriff has another lawsuit pending . Rumor is he lost on last one mostly due to Retaliztion claims. Hell fire Would a law man in this county actually violate the very laws he is sworn to uphold against another citizen.Yes... where was our Paper letting ALL know what some of us know because we have access to the Federal court records, All have access. Its public. Shame on our paper for letting the Sheriff and County Judge tell them not to print the truth about why we tax payers paid in excess of 100 grand for wrongs and law violations. Retaliation!!! You folks need to go to David Jansen and tell him to give you copy of that case and the settlement facts. Cite FOIA to him. He will oblige you with a copy. This county and city has a bunch of yuppies running it. Fire them all. TEA

The County Judge is taking bids on lawn care for 2012. you can go by his office and pick up the bid specs.

Bids will be received at the County Judges office until 9:00 a.m. December 19.

by this thread people seem to no longer want to pay and read the local paper. we have several lawn care operations, maybe this post will help one of them know about the bids being accepted by the county judge...

Hey Moron! Why do we have this budgetary problem here in Randolph county ?
It's the tax and spend mentality of all those Democrats that you elected to the JP positions along with that county judge.
It's the entitlement attitude that the county employees have to have a pay raise again since they just got one last year .. nobody else got a pay raise but the Q court voted themselves one and then also had free health insurance.
That reduction in the payroll tax is for Social security , two things happen with that :
In the long run since you didn't contribute that much you Social security payment will be lower when you retire
It has the effect of under funding the present Social Security system.

Correct. We heard that one of them unfortunate men who was electricuted in Maynard was actually sent to a crime lab for a criminal investigation. That poor mans name was ran over the scanner before they even picked his body up off the ground. The Throesch name never mentioned, Throesch buried same weekend, The other no name man was sent to crime lab for a week for toxicology testing we heard. Im ashamed to live here in this place. We live only miles from that area and watched from a distance. Our paper should have reported that or at least had a reporter do a story on the outcome. Like the fires here, Some are sad stories for people, Home loss, possessions and no one cares.
