You guys do not get paid enough to go through the hell you have to go through in our society today. A man leads the police to his son because he knows his son needs to be stopped because he has already tried to kill his father and his girlfriend. Yet when he raises his gun to shoot the police officers he expects them to lay down their guns because he has mental issues. Jonesboro Sun... shame on you for printing this story. I cannot believe you actually printed it. Yes I am sure this man is carrying a heavy burden because he led the police to him. But I want to know how this man would feel if he had not and his son went into a public place and killed about twenty people because he had not been stopped yet. There is an old saying that fits this situation for our police today.. They are damned if they do, and they are damned if they don't. I myself thank God everyday to protect our men who are trying to protect us.

about time the details came out since the local paper had little on it.
no shame on the Sun for publishing it.
folks need to read the article instead of your claims on what was in it.

your - "Yet when he raises his gun to shoot the police officers he expects them to lay down their guns because he has mental issues" is BS. no such thing was stated.
also never in the paper that he raised the gun.

per the Sun and dad -
"why didn't they shoot him in the shoulder?"
"they need to be trained differently."

Sun - "shot seven times, including four shots to the chest."
does seem excessive imo.

You cannot aim a gun at a police officer and expect to not be shot. It is plain and simple. Those officers were well trained and acted appropriately. They were investigated by the state police and promptly cleared for active duty as their actions were completely justified. You think 7 shots is excessive?? Hardly. Compared to most police shootings that shows a lot of self control. I would like to see your reaction when someone points a gun at you. Probably crapping in your panties. And how could the dad expect them to shoot him in the shoulder, this isn't a video game. Those men only have one life. Taking those shots not only protected themselves but their partner as well. We need to be thankful for these brave men not secondguessingntheir actions that have already been cleared by professionals.

No one can say how they would handle the situation unless they were there. If I had an armed man.. Considered dangerous, turn around during a chase and even remotely act like they were gonna do something, I'd unload my pistol on them if I had my gun in my hand. That's basic instinct. Kill or be killed. I for one wouldn't be willing to risk the person's life standing beside me either. Imagine living a life of, he killed my friend and I didn't do anything about it.

"You think 7 shots is excessive??"

depends if the subject is aiming or fired at me, if most shots had missed him or if he had been hit several times yet.

how many total shots(including misses if any) were fired?

7 hits with 4 to the chest IS excessive imo

I agree with you this sounds as though it was approched with the idea that they were going to shoot the man if they saw him,7 shots pretty much explains the sitution, these officers could have done better had they not been so scared, this could have been handled better, its what you get when you hire jo blow of the street.

He did fire the gun at his girlfriend and it misfired. Not a risk I would take. And they have to go to school to be a cop, so they aren't "Jo Blows" off the street.

First of all you are mouthing about a man being shot,a man with mental problems,a completely different situtaion, had this been your son,you might look at it differentlly,i wasn't there,i cant critize either side, but i am only going to hear one side and that is the police opinion, but i will say that we all need to stop mouthing about this shooting,i can assure you that one of the officers there will have a son, these men will relive this many, many, times, they will have to deal with this, not me or you,i will never post on this again.

It doesn't matter if he had mental issues if he effin pointed a gun at someone and attempted to shoot them. Lucky girl. It was his time or he wouldn't have died anyway. One of them I know has a son and a daughter. I don't care if your son has Down syndrome. If they pick a gun up with the intention of hurting or killing someone, then they are considered armed and dangerous and I would do the same. I'm sorry. And I'm sorry for that family, but he should have thought about the consequences ahead of time.

I think officers are here to protect. He could have done things differently, that's for sure. The father went to him for help and his son was killed. The officer didn't have to kill him, in my opinion. His was another life the officer could have saved if he'd done things differently.

They defused the situation with someone who was not in their right mind and prevented others from being injured. Job well done.

You don't try your options with an armed man. You can, but see how we'll that turns out for ya.

Officers fire their guns until the threat is no longer a threat, they are trained to double tap. Fire twice still standing fire twice. Shoot to injure ya right then we would have dead cops, cops are not a threat to the public that man was. The man was shot while standing. He had every chance to drop his weapon & surrender, he chose not to.
Why didn't dad get his son help years ago, why wasn't he taught not to pull guns on people. Why is it always the cops fault, they were protecting the public & the town of Pocahontas.
Shame on the sun, stand behind our cops that risk their lives to protect the public.

With the way our society is going today, you better be proud you have a good police system in your town. Because it is only going to get worse not better. Pray for your officers because they are going to need it. And thank them for being there when you need them most. From what I understand, Pocahontas is nothing but a drug town anymore. Meth will mess a normal person up, what do you think it does to someone who already has mental issues. All I can say is God be with these brave men who protect us without wanting anything in return. Amen
