Col Meeks was a great man and a TRUE hero. The cheap and worthless comments are totally unnecessary and really none of anyone else's business, as others have said before me. I realize topix has and is becoming a place for cheap and scandalous gossip and almost nothing more, but to disrespect a true war and local hero after passing is ridiculous, and one day you will pay, either by karma, or by judgment. May you all making sly remarks about his finances feel ashamed and guilty for what you've said about a man who fought hard for our free. Shame on you all.
who mentioned his finances?

I didn't misread, as you pointed out the obit says "silver star" and the only Roy Edgar Meeks that ever received the SS was in the Korean war, whict at that time Meeks was like 10 years old.
He got 2 silver stars in vietnam

According to military records no one named Meeks received a silver star in Vietnam let alone 2 silver stars. Purple hearts and bronze stars were handed out by the hand fulls but silver stars were very rare.

Nobody but nobody got 2 silver stars in the Vietnam conflict
and your Colonel Roy doesn't show up on any registry for ever receiving one .

And he isn't there
If he was telling these stories when he was alive and it wasn't true then it would be a violation of Federal Law.
no records for him

Well it's too bad that there are no records for even one silver star for colonel Roy!
But then someone who received 2 silver stars surely would as an amazing hero and there would be books written about him.
Sadly there isn't any records of him on any of the sites ,

With regard to Silver Stars, we estimate the USMC and USCG listings to be at least 95% complete, but the listings for other branches of service are only about 70% complete. Absence of a name for a Silver Star should NOT be considered evidence that someone did NOT get the Silver Star, especially where USA/USAF/USN recipients are concerned.

i would trust the man who knew him and wrote the tribute in the paper.

Thanks for your service to our Country. All the perosnal and cheap comments aside, he was NEVER accused or charged like many around here with a Law Degree. He was a provider to our Freedom, and a brave man.
Prayers to his family.
Rest in Peace Sir.
When he ran for the judge position I voted for him.
He was a better person than than the one who defeated him in the election and he never was charged with corruption.
His military rank and record did speak highly of his abilities.

Colonel David h. Hackworth received 7 silver stars in Vietnam so it is probably true that Colonel Meeks would have received 2.
I have been interested in finding information about Colonel Meeks citations for his awards.
Maybe someone will provide that information,by all military standards he was a true hero.
When he ran for public office I never heard any mention of his military career which I think would have helped him in the election.
I voted for him because he was trying to improve things in this county.

Roy Meeks was a true hero that did indeed earn these awards. I had the pleasure of being Roy's Son-in-Law several years ago, and in fact, helped him hang the citations in his basement when he lived in Ravenden Springs. It has been my experience that a true hero does not brag about what they did to receive awards, and this was the case with Roy. He was a true patriot that was very proud of his service to his country, and I am very sorry to learn of his passing.
