Talked to a teacher today at Alma Spikes and they said pretty much the entire staff up there is in arms about a recent questionable hire. She said everyone thought a girl up there that has been a sub was a lock for the job and the job ended up going to someone else. She said the sub was certified and had been doing terrific up there and had the support of the entire teaching staff basically but politics apparently got in the way.

Anyone know anything about this?

Are you seriously going to get on this gossip site and attempt to second-guess the administration and/or board members? Once you get elected to the board, and/or get your degree and get hired on as an administrator, THEN you can decide whom to hire, and base that decision on certain criteria...and then everyone can second-guess YOU while not having a clue about why you do or do not hire one person over another. And then they can post something as ridiculous as YOU have on a site as trashy as this one....
You have nerve.....why try to stir up something and sling mud? You do not know reasons for the decision, nor does the district have to get your approval first. Personnnel issues are confidential and unless harm is being caused to a child, then you don't need to be trying to tear someone down.

Perhaps you should go back and read where I was asking what went on up there and quit trying to dive down my throat to make me believe everything is as it seems and there is no such thing as a buddy system, hiring friends, favors, or anything else underhanded that goes on out there. I was asking for more information and got a lot more out of the post after yours than I got from your rant.

Pocahontas is all about wo you know or who you blow. There are many teachers who have no business being there and many teachers who should be working there and can't get a job. MANY have been hired by having family members who work there, just loook at the last names of present and past teachers, you will see trends. Pocahontas is a Payton place, get used to it or move to greener pastures. Pocahontas Schools like ho's and child molesters for teachers, good luck changin' it

I know what you are talking about, I think it's bullshit that the one who got hired for the kindergarten position, Shawn Carter put his two cent's in I am sure, plus there is family there who I am sure carried some weight. Shame too because the one who did not get hired was far more qualified.

usually the sub doesn't teach too much, they usually just give out assignments that the teacher left for them. Unless the sub was in that same classroom for weeks, then their grades didn't go up because of the sub....just saying.

not involved and don't know who is involved - but i've seen a lot of qualified teachers who proved to be bad teachers and did a poor job. hiring is done by the folks who will have to deal with and be responsible for their decision. good rookies are seldom hired in case they turn out to be a bust. almost impossible to fire a bad hire. experience is often hired over potential and personality.

Dont get discouraged...For the last 40 yrs of my life I have dealt with this issue with many clients. Many of them are successful in fair and due process. It just takes guts and fortitude to fight a system of nepotism when it comes to hire fire issues.Nepotism and discrimination is illegal and is specified in those company policys. Same thing is in the Law enforcement agencies here and county government. I posted a year ago, that with this economy, we would see a rise in this activity due to job loss, these influential people will give jobs to family members, buddy system. Some dont post jobs anymore, against rules. It is illegal to not follow a policy in hire\fire Issues if a person can go in and prove it. Fact is many dont pursue due to the cost of attorney. I always worked on contingency fee and helped as much as possible in cases I know I could win. I will get BS after me for being a Yankee from a few hundred miles up north, but so be it, folks should pursue this issue when its very clear its discrimination in hire \ fire issues based on qualifications. A good attn will weed it out and nip it in the bud. Its called justice and due process, we are all afforded this by our Constitition. Another fact...Just like up north, BS same up there, folks just dont think no one will buck the good ole boys, but if you google a little bit, you can see the good ole boys can go down if THE PEOPLE will rise up, and dont forget to VOTE THE BUMS OUT! That will help tremendously. VOTE ALL INCUMBENTS OUT!

Who is the qualified sub that was picked over? The paper lists the ones who were hired and two of those are recently graduated and one has been teaching for a few years.

If Jan had something to do with Ivy being hired, then she picked well. Maybe Ivy Pfeffer was hired on her own merit. I have had some issues through the years with Mrs. Pfeffer, but I believed they were handled properly once brought to her attention. SHe is a good principle and a fair person.

Becky Lindner was hired for Kindergarten, it is on page two of the Pocahontas Star Herald and if I had to guess who DIDN'T get hired and SHOULD have it would be Blair O'Donnell. I don't know Blair persoanlly, but I will say from her subbing in my childs class that she is great. She is not just your "normal" sub, she teaches the children while she is in there.

Thanks for the info. I do not know Blair either. I know that Becky applied and was not hired last year. So maybe this was her year. If Blair is certified to teach, then she should teach while she is in there. Subs are usually not certified. And certified subs are paid more than "normal" subs. Good luck to Blair in the future. She sounds great. This is going to be a tough year to get hired anyway, since Oak Ridge is going to have so many unemployed teachers.

All I know is that my teacher friend up there said practically every teacher up there felt Blair had earned the job and they were shocked and quite angry when she didn't get it. Also heard the girl they hired and Carter have been friends for quite some time so if that is true, it has to raise some ethical questions. Did the school board know about the friendship before they voted or was that kept from them?

are you kidding me? Are you now saying that people in a town this size cannot and should not have friends? WOW Tons of people here went to school together, end up working together, raising their kids together, go to church together, have kinfolk in this town, etc...is there a law against any of that? This can be done ethically....believe it or not....and these two folks DO have ethics!! In this instance, I'm sure the school board knows of everything...how can you live in this town and NOT know? I can promise you that the administration and school board do NOT take their responsibilities lightly. As I said before, no one knows what the decisions were based on, and it is not for us to know or judge or slam! Can you end this thread already?

If you don't work under her. I hear she belittles some of the teachers.
