At the risk of sounding condescending, and at the risk of looking like a jerk who wants nothing more than to tear others down for their beliefs, I want to share with you my feelings. I assure you I am not that person, but considering the vast knowledge we now possess through our exploration of human development over a period of 200,000 years, I can't help but wonder how anyone could fail to question a system of beliefs that has only existed for 2,000 years. You believe with everything in you that a christian heaven exists, ignoring that the very idea of a heaven is such a new concept to our species. For that matter monotheism (the belief in only one god) wasn't even an idea until a few thousand years ago. How then do you presume that after tens of thousands of years of human existence, that suddenly in the last 2000 years humankind has suddenly been given the "true" religion? How can you see the history of the development of these ideas in humans and not realize that they are and always have been man made mental concepts? More to the point, how do you even believe that the bible is the "true word" of this new god? Because the humans who wrote the bible said so? The point is that it was written by man, created from the minds of men and nothing more. Believing that they speak for god when they are the ones telling you it was from god is like believing an educated lunatic that god will end the world tomorrow simply because he wrote an eloquently worded and persuasive story describing it. He's only a man, just as they were, and just as the countless other creators of religions before them were. Learning the origins of all the countless religions and belief systems that have existed and how they have developed and built upon one another throughout the course of human existence makes it painfully obvious that any and all religions that have or ever will exist were created by man. You can see the building of these concepts along the way, you can see the modification of previous belief systems as they become more and more tailored throughout history by humans. I for one choose not to ignore history, not to believe everything that I'm told without question in the name of "faith". This knowledge cannot be unlearned, one does not simply forget indisputable and documented facts just because these facts happen to go against everything they were told was true, against everything that they were told was real. I hope that this will at least make you think, and at the very least bring you to a greater awareness of why you really believe the way that you do. If anything else enjoy your blissful ignorance (ignorance simply being a lack of knowledge, not the same as stupidity) and count yourself lucky that you can still fully believe in these fairytales, because without these farytales the reality of life an death might consume you. To know that when we die the same thing happens to us as does any other biological creature on this planet, that we simply cease to exist, can be a heavy burden. Try to imagine your life before you were born. You can't, because there is nothing. Thus it will be when you die and the biological processes of life cease to serve the function of your consciousness. Don't argue with me because I don't really want to debate, I don't really want to push anyone away from the bliss of religion if they are so steadfast in their beliefs, I just want some of those who have considered the evidence to think for themselves a little.

you can lead the thirsty to water.... but they will drown. We all have hopes and dreams. To realize the vastness of total existence, and the insignificance of our personal role is humbling. Hence, the human desire to portray one our own as "god"...

Indeed, the need for an explanation for the unknown, to gain understanding of this vastness is human nature. This is why, even as an athiest I am not at all against religion. There is no fault whatsoever in finding comfort and solace in the answers that have been created, religion serves this purpose. The difficulty in being an atheist is realizing that we as humans must be our own gods, completely responsible for every decision and every consequence our judgement creates. There is no "devil" to blame. Abraham Lincoln said "when I do good, I feel good. When I do bad I feel bad...that is my religion." Thus we must strive to own ourselves, and to hold ourselves accountable for every action we take. The feelings Abe described are also part of our human nature, and using religion as a crutch to bolster our good and to discount our bad is just taking the easy way out. But again, who could blame them? I hate how cliche the phrase "ignorance is bliss" is, but it really, really is bliss..
