Cowboy you seem to be well informed. What kind of technology does each classroom have k-12 (ie... Smart board, ipad, interactive whiteboards)?

No iPads yet, but the school does have a mobile computer lab with 30 computers that teachers can use anytime . They also have other computer labs throughout the campus that are utilized by the teachers . In the classroom , I know they have PowerPoint projectors and document cameras. Some teachers have smart boards but not all.

My child went to mdw and in his/her room there were 4 computers running on one tower which made them very slow. His/Her teacher was the only teacher that had an interactive board not a smart board. The overhead projector was such junk that she couldn't use it unless it was pitch black in the classroom along with the document camera. This all falls on administration which is in direct contact with school board. We decided to move back to our old school after that school year because Pocahontas school was a regression.

I am a retired educator. During my 36 years, my jobs included teacher, counselor, coach, administer. I did not work for Pocahontas School District. There is bad information on this site. I do not have a dog in this fight, but information that can set the record straight.
First of all, every district must have mils (taxes), that is just for M & O (maintenance and operations). The state sets the minimum amount for this and that money can only be spent on M & O, repair, upkeep of buildings and grounds. This money canít be spent on tech. On the subject of tech, the biggest problem the school has had is band width. I know they have added bandwidth and I believe they now have the largest amount in the area by far. If you had a clue of how funding works, you would know if you add such in the smart way, the district will only have to pay 20% of the monthly charges. If not, you pay it all. This is not your $30, a month Suddenlink internet bill, but thousands.
On the hiring of non-traditional teachers, Pocahontas is not the only district that has done this. On a good year, ASU will graduate 1 physic teacher, most years it is 0. Most high school teaching areas are in short supply. Why would a person trained in a higher paying profession want to become a teacher? I can tell you from interviewing them for positions I had open and some that are former students, the reasons were very simple; I want to be close to my family and there is no private industry jobs , I got hurt and physically cannot do my present job, etc. There are several non-traditional teachers in this area, and most of them have turn out to be some of the best.
Board members are very limited on what they can and cannot do on hiring of personnel and business decisions. If a board member has a relative apply for a position, he or she cannot participate in the discussion or hiring of that position, period!
As far as money spending goes, the board and super has on a good year, maybe 5% of the entire budget as discretionary. Which means in a 10 million dollar budget, maybe $500,000 is not dictated by the state and federal government on how it is spent.

I vote for no change. Keep the man in there that has done a good job, has good morals and good ethics. I see no reason for change if it is not for the better. Nothing against Aaron but I will be voting for Chester.

Actually the state aid to schools is based upon their enrollment. School are given about 6,300 per student, per year. The children that attend St. Paul's, no one get those funds, not St. Paul's, not Pocahontas. I am not replying about Mr.Baltz sending his child to St. Paul's,that is his choice. Just believe in facts.

I will not vote for a man who wants say so on how the school spends money but will not send his child to that school. Why should he be on the board if the school is not good enough for his child. And by him sending his child to a Catholic school Pocahontas loses out on over $6000. Pocahontas has teachers perfectly capable of teaching his child. Lets support those who support our school.

James Ray Chester only keeps the board position to protect his son. That I may add is a nontraditional teacher. So don't give me all that big heart crap about the Chesters they need to go!
Are you ignorant - the "Chesters" as you refer to them are good people with nothing to hide, Casey has been a postive influence on many and his Mother has taken care of a lot of folks in the past from buying lunches to clothes and other support. There have been many non-traditional teachers at PHS over the years - you are lucky to have them. This is a public school board election - one would think that somone running for the board that sends his or her kids to a private school has a conflict of interest.

Thank You for that clearly biased post.
So Aaron only has been married once but annulled twice.... That's got to be a real hoot!

I will be voting for James Ray but not for the reason you posted not to vote for Baltz. I believe that the parents that chose to send their children to st.pauls should receive vouchers . Baltz tax dollars still goes to Pocahontas school. your reasons shows how narrow mined you are.

This is my first and hopefully last post to this forum. The talk between the people on this forum is a prime example of how political the public school system is. If you don't believe this watch any campaign commercial for any presidential election and see if the comments made in those commercials don't reflect what's going on here on this site. I'm not saying that people can't express their opinions one way or another in fact I think they should but at the same time should we drop so low as to publicly deface each candidate? Take this into consideration, imagine if students from Pocahontas got on here and looked at all the negative comments about both parties, would they believe that their eduction is in the right hands? Being in the education system I can tell you that most kids are not real crazy about school and reading something like this surely isn't going to help. I realize that this is an election and it's going to be political (and I'm not saying that Im better than anyone who has posted on this site) but wouldn't it be a much more productive discussion to talk about what each person would like to do for the district that way someone who may not know either candidate that well would have an opportunity to make an informed decision on who to vote for? All that being said my problem with school boards in general (not just pocahontas) is that you can look back at months worth of minutes and see almost all votes being 5-0. This shows a huge flaw in the system. No 5 people should agree all the time on that many different topics. School boards that are successful and make strives to greatly improve their districts are those who don't have 5-0 votes. I would encourage anyone who reads these posts on here to disregard any information about either candidate and do your own personal research. No one is perfect and that includes both men running for this school board position. So as far as I am concerned I don't care if you have been married 3 times if your son works at the school or you have three arms four legs and 27 fingers. If I think you are the best fit for the position you will get my vote. So please do your civic duty and research both options and make an informed decision rather than basing your vote on some non sense you read on some public forum site.

Is it a good sign he is spending thousands? Or just trying to buy votes? Just saying. He asked me for my vote but he won't get it. Heard he wants to build new gym. But in order to do that has to raise millage. This community can't afford more expenses.

We need level-headed leaders on the board, not ones that want new and better with no consideration given for responsible spending of tax-payers' money. I am also against anyone that just wants to get on the board to see his/her agenda met. That is selfish and immature and controlling....not what we need.

school really needs a gym/multipurpose building soon. stage and seating like brtc has is needed and would be good.
it was looked at closely several yrs ago by the board.
would be better value for the community and get more use than the sad waste on a seasonal 7.5 mil pool that a small minority will use. if we can afford it, we can afford new school buildings.
might possibly do it without an increase if financed long term.

board has probably looked long term at it vs other needed major new construction. might need a new high school campus one of these days with possible future consolidation. alma spikes is also getting old.

We can not afford this demoted car salesman Aaron Baltz. His old worn out solution to everything is to raise taxes. Do you ever wonder why Pocahontas is no longer a thriving community?
Just look at the massive increases in property and sales taxes. Taxes on the telephone, taxes on propane, water and natural gas.
There is NOTHING that is essential to life that isn't taxed by these blood thirsty Bureaucrats.

My vote says Aaron is not on here posting. It's a bunch of idiots who are friends of the men running. Since all the talk of Baltz is negative I'm guessing its those good Christians out at sutton. Glad I don't go there.

My vote says that both Aaron and his mommy are here posting and it's negative against the other candidate.
I won't be voting for Mr. Baltz, there are many members of the Baltz family that I admire but he isn't one of them.
