What do you think about a pet store being opened in Pocahontas?

I am just trying to get a feel for what people would think. Me and my husband are going to try to open a pet store in either Pocahontas or Walnut Ridge.
We plan on selling a huge variety of reptiles like:
Ball Pythons, Redtail Boas, Corn Snakes, Milk Snakes, King Snakes, several frogs and toads,Leopard Geckos, Panther Geckos, Crested Geckos, Chameleons, Iguanas, Tarantulas, Tegus, Monitor lizards, etc, and also exotic mammals like hedgehogs, Degus, Short-Tail Opposums, Sugar Gliders, baby Skunks, rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, etc.
We will also sell all supplies for reptiles, small mammals, horses, livestock, dogs and cats. Birds and bird supplies would be a possibility.
We plan on having a huge selection of supplies at much lower costs than petco, farm service, etc.

That is a stupid idea. There are enough homeless animals in the US for every household to have at least 10 each. We also have 3 rescue groups in Randolph County alone, the Humane Society, 5 Rivers Animal Aide, and Angel rescue. What makes you think we need more animals??? You need to re-think using animals to make money. Really if you want to start your own business open a clothing store or start a housekeeping business. But breeding and selling in a pet store, that idea done sank in this town. Don't you remember the pet store where China Star buffet is?? It closed for a reason!! Duh!!!

Also, you have no idea about prices, Farm Service is some of the cheapest supplies around. You wouldn't be able to go cheaper than their prices because you wouldn't be able to mass merchandise like farm service. You wont be a chain. You will be a mom and pop store and you will never make it. How many people are going to buy those kinds of pets when they are struggling to put food on their table. Just saying....
some animals are illegal

You first need to realize that most people don't want exotic animals , I believe baby skunks and some of the other species are illegal to own in Arkansas.
You need a business plan and a bank loan .
Most small pet stores have failed in this area because there just isn't the demand for the animals.
If you are going to do this ,try a bigger city where there is also more money and a larger demand .

sorry to rain on your parade, but several attempts at pet stores have failed in Poky over the years. Are you new here? Pet Adventure was a large store, and I believe part of a small chain operation. They tried it a couple of years until they wore out and left.
We all appreciate your effort to build the economy, but...
If you like workiing with animals, why not start small with dog / pet grooming, or boarding, etc, then slowly build an inventory of supplies that your customers
want. Don't borrow a large sum, you will lose it.

you could maybe sell cheaper than Farm Service or others but they sell on credit. I dont think you could show any profit. At best you would just be swapping nickles. Go to jonesboro. folks from Poky & Nut hill will drive there in a heart beat> the Good four lane road and 60 MPH speed limit makes it convienent to drive to jonesboro.Dont waste your efforts in Poky.

I have 2 mother cats and 5 kittens I've been trying very hard to get someone to take them in and give them good homes. Tried all the animal rescues and everyone else that claim they will take animals - yeah right. I had them dumped on me - both mom's were pregnant and I've been caring for them and the kittens all summer and cannot afford to keep them any longer, don't want to take them to the pound, want to find them good family to stay with but no one seems interested, not even all these animal loving people - or so they claim. If you can't get anyone to take and care for 2 mom's and 5 kittens I doubt anyone would want a pet store, no matter what type animals they sell. Just my opinion of course.

The last line or two of what you said is totally true. I am sorry by you may have to take them in and have them put down if you can't afford to feed them. Sorry you can't find homes for the cats. I am allergic or I would give one or three a home, but I just can't.

Most of the animal lovers already have all the pets they can afford, why don't you do your part and practice what you preach? If you have been feeding them all summer then they belong to you and they are your responsibility, not anyone elses.

Nobody here has sold mainly reptiles, it's been mostly small animals like guinea pigs, bunnies, hamsters, etc. While we will sell those too our focus is going to be on reptiles. We also have a website and quite a few sales will be online. We breed Ball Pythons and there are more reptile lovers and owners in the area than you seem to think. If we bred rats and mice for feeders we would get a ton of customers. Petco is the only local place to buy them and they charge way too much.
We have thought about how we are going to do this, this isn't just a whim. I know how to write a business grant proposal and I know about all the permits and such. Maybe Pocahontas wouldn't be such a crappy place to live if it had decent residents who supported the city and it's businesses. If it's not Pocahontas then it'll be put in in Walnut Ridge.

I know plenty about the prices. Even without buying things wholesale I can still order online and get the same thing farm service carries for about $10-15 less or more. I have suppliers lined up and all that's required is a city permit and to be registered on a database. None of our animals we'd sell would be illegal to own, we aren't selling any venomous snakes. We just have to find a location and get the money to buy the shelving units and other supplies and the initial inventory to get us going. The only thing we'll deal with when it comes to dogs and cats is selling supplies for them. We have no interest in selling them or grooming them or breeding them. I guarantee there has NOT been a pet store like this in Pocahontas.
