Marching isn't illegal. Nobody is going to lose a job over it.

Unfortunately name calling doesn't get anyone anyplace. I am grateful to have my job - I didn't have connections and I do work through lunch most days so I can finish. All of us think we deserve more money - and most do. If raises were based on people who shop and get on FB, there would be a lot of people never having a shot at a raise. Oh, and let's not forget the people who make copies for their kids homework. You're not going to find private sector employees doing that...

Give me a break! If an employee is making copies for their kid's homework, that is the fault of his/her manager for not stopping it. I don't blame the person if they can do it and have nothing said to them about it!

I do not feel sorry for state employees and lack of raises. Even though, my family also is affected by this. I don't because you have very secure jobs. It is damn near impossible to get fired, unless you are COMPLETELY useless and stupid enough to get yourself caught doing something you should not.

Look around your office. Can you spot the dead weight? Can you find the 20-30% that does very little while others pick up the slack and do more? Historically state government has hired more people to pick up the workloads of the slackers. If you cannot find this person, maybe you are in the 20-30%?

If there was less dead weight, furloughs may not be needed. So look around at your fellow worker. Are they doing their jobs?

With that said, I will say that I do side with the state government employee that if you all aren't getting raises, the legislators should not either. They should enjoy the same pain as they impose upon the workers.

That is not necessarily true. Managers cannot always know what every person does every minute of the day. It is unrealistic to expect that they do. It IS the person's fault. They know right from wrong. That is abusive and wasteful and could easily be turned into an offence that leads to termination.

These types of wastes cost the state money. One person doesn't, I will give you that. But you have to think about the abuses state wide that cost 100's of thousands of dollars each year.

Not excluded from said wastes would be:

1) Taking longer or more than allowed breaks.(loss of work time)
2) Playing on Facebook, topix, shopping. etc.(Loss of work time and use of state resources)
3) Low work output.
4) Talking on the phone for personal business, texting, emailing friends and jokes.

These are easily quantified wastes that increase the operating costs of state government. And I have barely scratched the surface. One person doing this occasionally doesn't hurt, but the exponential effects across the entire state is staggering.

How many of YOUR furlough days covered the cost of other state workers waste?

Really? You would be surprised at what the "private sector employees" do. You work thru lunch? Hahahahaha, I bet you do. I bet if you do, you take comp time or whatever, you aint giving it away and if you are, then you are just a fool. State Government or any government cannot be ran like a corporation that is trying to make a profit. We are not a corporation, we do not make a profit, we are GOVERNMENT. We are here to serve the public interest. We have to administer the government programs and laws to best serve the citizens. The goal is to administer the government with minimal costs. So if someone is copying their kid's homework is that cost efficient??? NO, but is it corruption? I don't think so. I think it is someone take advantage of the copy machine and I think there are much larger wastes and corruption in our State Government. I think we need to focus on the real waste and corruption and stop picking on the poor state workers who barely make enough to live on, and therefore take advantage of the free copy machine at work. I think your nit-picking takes the focus off of the real waste and corruption. I also hate state employees who brag about how they "have no connections"......as if, "OK, I am really a good employee as compared to all of you employees with connections who suck". I also find it hard to believe you had NO connections, even if a small one, bet you had one. But whatever, doesn't make you any better than the connected employee, just makes you THINK you are better.

Wow! Town Crier, you're a real piece of work - or maybe just lazy as hell. No, I don't claim comp time when I work through lunch. I work by choice. I've never thought I was better than anyone. I did not have connections - even a small one - I've worked hard all my life and that's how I got my job.

I say give all state employees a raise and put them on the same schedule as the private sector. They get New Year's Day, memorial, thanksgiving and Christmas. The don't get all those extra holidays. And they don't get off half day to vote or half day to give blood. Give me a break

If you're working through your lunch and breaks, you have no one to blame but yourself AND your supervisor is breaking state and federal labor laws if he/she is aware of it.

That's foolishness of your own doing.

There are far too many who do mediocre work and I agree that too many of us have to pick up for the slackers. The hopeful goal is to move up into management so we are in a position to change the dynamics.

And, if you're that dedicated, there are opportunities.

Court Jester - I absolutely agree state & federal laws provide breaks & lunch. If I want or need to run errands, I definitely take them, but if I have a report due, I'll skip. I'm 5 years from retirement so I'm leaving the opportunities for the bright up and coming young people - and I hope you're one of them!

Really? You are retiring and leaving the opportunities? You sure you aren't going to retire and then get to walk right back into a your old job, so that the bright up and coming young people never get a chance at a promotion because those who retire, come back and double dip.

I say we are not the private sector and we should get all the same holidays as the Federal Government employees get, however we do not. Our pay goes down, our insurance goes up, we should at least get the Federal holidays since we are also government. The private sector is making a profit. Government is not there to make a profit, they are there to server the citizens and the citizens should not get served on Federal holidays.
