I am looking at land there in your beautiful little town. My family is from Florida but we LOVE Tennessee. I was wondering how well interracial (spanish and american) marriage is looked upon there? Are there good public schools and places for our childen to spend time? Are there any Universities close so I can continue graduate school? We want to find a place where we can live in peace but be a part of our community. Small towns of course have their pros and cons but I am hoping that pleasant shade will have many more pros than cons. We are a very "down home" type of family. My family is originally from Kentucky but I was born and raised in Florida. I am a bonified GRITS (girl raised in the south) and even though my husband was born in Puerto Rico he was raised here in Florida and is more southern than spanish lol. Tell me what you think, will we fit in your town or is it not ready. Thanks and God Bless

You'll do fine here. There's a lake with a beach, parks, hiking trails, and a campsite nearby. It's a very friendly place, but kindness should be returned if you really want to be happy. Yes, there is beginning to be more Spanish speaking people there. Defeated Creek elementary is closest to Pleasant Shade, but you can send your kids to any school in the county. If some buses dont travel to the school of your choice, you'll have to provide transportation. Universities are 45+ minutes away. Cumberland University is the closest and it's expensive, but there are other choices closer to Nashville. It really is a great place to raise a family.

A lot of people around here have old ideas still in their head and a lot don't look at interracial relationships as they should because of it. My suggestion is to not care what they think though. If you're asking because you expect to be discriminated against, I wouldn't worry too much on that. As far as the schools go here I went to CES (Carthage Elementary) and SCHS (Smith Co. High) and it depends on what teachers they get. Some teachers don't deserve to be teaching in the schools, in my opinion. If I were you I'd be very active in their school experience if you want them to be well educated. TTU is about 40 minutes away in Cookeville and is nice college. If you're willing to go a little further you could attend MTSU which won't take that much longer although it's in the opposite direction of TTU as it is in Murfreesboro. This little town has a lot of gossip go on in it but as long as you're down home family I doubt you'll have worries, all though I'm sure someone will gossip about you being in an interracial relationship. As I've said this community is mainly older people that are stuck in old mind sets of how people "should" live.
You'll fit in if you want to fit in.
