I have NEVER had a good experience at this store! You can never find an employee when you need one and there is always a long line or some kind of mindless delay at checkout. The staff is poorly trained and usually consists of mumbling teenagers who actively avoid customers. This is not an exaggeration or unfair characterization of their employees.
Even management does not know their own products, don't know what they have in stock, and often claim to never have even heard of products that Academy has stocked regularly for years. When this is pointed out to them, they act confused and slightly insulted. When I have found the item myself they seem surprised and act like they just cannot believe that I knew what I was talking about.
I am absolutely sick of the shoddy customer service and uncaring attitude" of the staff at this store! My previous but polite and reasoned complaints to management have been met with promises to fix the problems but they obviously have not done so.
Today, 3-07-09, lines at the registers were backed up well into the merchandise area for approx 15 minutes before the store manager ever got on the intercom to request additional assistance at the front. I was never able to find an employee for assistance in the team sports area. the people at the front called for me and they weren't able to find anyone either. Imagine what kind of dysfunctional management they have when the customer service people at the front cannot locate their own employees? Guess where the store manager was? Sitting on his duff in his little cubicle while his store disintegrated around him. Any fool could see that there was a serious problem in the store. A real store manager would have done what his title says and managed the problem. That has never happened during my experiences at Academy Sports in East Plano and it sure didn't happen today.
Boy were there some angry people in that store today! All those customers and no customer service! You could see the mad looks on peoples faces and hear them loudly sighing as they stood in long lines. Those faces got even redder when employees talked about taking their breaks right there in front of the customers.
How many times should a guy give a place a chance? I've given them about seven (7) chances to get it right and they haven't done it yet. Academy Sports in East Plano just keeps getting worse. As a repeat customer who has given the place a fair chance, I urge anyone who reads this to avoid this place like the plague.
I only wish there was some way I could give this place a "negative" star rating.

If you have any complaints of the employees or the management please do not hesitate to contact corporate office at 281, 646, 5200 and write down the employee or mangers name and let them know what you experienced at the store. If the problem was not fixed at store level then corporate needs to be notified ASAP. These experiences are ridiculous and should never happen to a customer and please do not let this hinder you from shopping at Academy. I would never allow this to happen at my Academy Store. Hope this helps you out!

I work at Academy. The reason you cant find an employee is because they are giving Academy thier moneys worth. If you want to pay minimum wage, exspect minimum help

The only times I have had any problems were on the weekends at this store. yes lines can get long and it's crazy how many people are shopping there, even on Sunday. But most the time, 90% I've had good experience there. I don't rely on store help and things are laid out to not really need it. I can see however how people might have negative opinion here. But they offer pretty good value IMO.

I was in Academy, Tuscaloosa, Al store on Dec. 22, 2012. I purchased a GPS $79.99. When I got ready to pay the system was very sluggish (assuming because it was close to Christmas and it was just sooo busy). Anyway, I swiped my credit card and it says "processing" then the cashier said "swipe it again ma'am" I did and I said now this is not going to charge me twice right he says "no". It says "processing" again. The cashier says "swie it again" I said I'll just use another card and you said "we'll, I swipe it for you on this side" I handed him a different card and it went through with no problem. I was thinking it was the machine and it didn't charge my card and I would be fine. Until....... I got home and I checked my account th next day and they ad taken money from both accounts. I immediately went to te store and the Asst. Store Mgr, Glenn, gave me hell from the time I walked in to the ime I walked out. This man didn't even give me a chance to explain what happened. I tried to show him proof tat it was deducted twice from two separate accounts he refused to even look at it. He told me he didn't care about that and tat was not going to help him AT ALZl. He said he had to get it researched by the accounting department and he was being as "transparent" with me as possible when he say "THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO FOR YOU TODAY" Are you freakin' serious?? You mean to tell me I'm 79.99 plus tax short because your store deducted it from my account twice and you can't do anything until accounting researches it when I have proof in black and white?? Of course ths is Dec 22nd and accounting's ass is off but he claimed they were not and he would call me t next day. LONGER story short... He didn't bother to call me Dec. 24th plus they closed at 6. In between all ths, I called the 800 number on the website and they were no help at all. I'm still trying to figure out why they labeled ths number "customer service" the lady on th phone told me she couldn't help me and that she recommends I stay there until he takes care of the situation but they were the only ones that could handle this because it's a store level incident. This is craaaazzzzyyy! Here it is Dec. 25th and I still have that money tied up which hindered my shopping. I was not planning on returning the GPS but behind this crap, I sure did . My husband purchased our son a bike there about 3 week prior to ths and unfortunately, he did not get it today for Christmas, we will be returning that also, I'll get him one another day. Here's a though, maybe I can get him another one when I get my damn money back. BTW, the Asst. Mgr , Glenn, misrepresented himself as the Store Mgr when he first spoke to me. People, please do not shop here, it's a mess when it comes to Custoner Service.

My first (and last) visit to Academy Sporting Good in Northwest Arkansas was most disappointing.

We dropped off a tennis racquet for getting it restrung and re-gripped. They said it might take 1 week.

1 week later, I called to find out about racquet. NOT DONE.
also they could not do the re-gripping and said a new associate misinformed me.

I went back, picked up racquet, and left---planning to never again return!!!

I will never shop at Academy again. I went to the Mesquite Texas store and could not get any service at all. The employees looked like the lowest form of life. Tattoos, pants sagging, shirts hanging out, face piercings, and dirty clothing. I was looking for pool cues and no one had a clue. The front greeter didn't know. The entry way was full of papers and trash and the walk ways were cluttered. One guy looked high on meth. What a low class mess.

Academy is a self service store with low prices and employees are not paid much and there are less associates so managers can cut down on payroll and get bonus. Blame corporate not the employees. If you walk in Academy and don't know what size shoe you wear or what bullets go in your gun, then you are an idiot. You need to be able to read to shop stores. It is not Neimans, it is a discount SELF SERVICE store. If you need someone to hold your hand go to Neimans. Learn how to read. If you want more associates then they will have raise the prices. Grow up and learn to read and know what you need to buy. We are not babysitters.

When I worked for Academy in Mesquite, the customers do not know how to think for themselves. They want a discount on everything and they switch tickets on merchandise which is the same as stealing in my book. I was a cashier who left and never went back. It is hard to get employees to work with these customers. We would put these people on camera. Yes customers your picture goes to the police along with your ID.

One recent Saturday morning I called Academy Sports to check on an order's shipment status; it was a birthday present timed to arrive on a ...well...birthday. When they couldn't answer my inquiry with any detail, I cancelled the order, or I thought I did. The training of their phone people is dismal, and I never received the promised email confirmation of shipment with tracking data. The transaction was "Escalated" to a higher level; even so I was never contacted. Just another example of poor service--I have a choice where to shop. No need to raise the BP.

But the breaking point came when they asked for feedback via email yesterday. I stated, essentially, what I said above. No insults, no profanity. Today I got an email inviting me to resubmit because my response didn't meet their criteria. Again, I was direct, but polite.

Academy Sports did a poor job with my transaction. Not a huge deal. Now, Academy Sports is a name I mention to friends and family whenever I think about it because they have elevated one poor sale into a big deal. If word of mouth advertising is considered the most effective, I will politely test it out and tell others of my experience.
