How tragic this must be to the family. It seems impossible to get our children to realize that they are not invincible. All of the WARNINGS that are fed to children to not drink and drive are ignored and this is the result. There is no immediate answer - only unanswered questions - on how to open everyone's eyes to the dangers of bad decisions. My prayers go out to this family and all other families who have had to deal with a tragedy like this. My prayers also go out to the young man that he may "wake up" and realize how precious life is and how it can be taken in the twinkling of an eye. May this be the first day of his new life - one in which consequences are thought of before making what could be a deadly decision

and we have very successful people like the president of Davenport University setting the example that this is what adults do - and then they lie about it saying it is a medical condition. How are our children to learn. Hope all are okay but you drink, you drive, you get killed. Very simple. Just like touch the hot stove as a kid and you learn quick. hope they live but I have no tolerance for this crap. Get them off the road one way or another. If if takes death so be it - better them killing themselves then innocent people on the road.

This wouldn't be the first time the kid drove after drinking, this wouldn't be the first time the kid got caught drinking and driving, this is just the first time he wrecked himself.

What a waste...bright kid...dumb choices...at least he only hurt himself with his actions!

You know what to all the people out there that make assumptions about kids and people from what the media says dont know anything you are blind to the real facts. I am a family friend and have grown up with Gerrit since I was young. First off when the cops talked to the press they did not know anything for sure he was rushed to Pipp immediately so they couldn’t say for sure whether it was speed and alcohol or not I am not saying those factors are ruled out but he was not just some drunk kid driving on the highway there is a reason for why he was on the road I am not going to release any information out of respect for the family but just to all of you who don’t know the real story the one the media tells you but the real one don’t make assumptions because I know the real story and it isn’t like the media portrays it to be. Also to all of you who write these rude comments about this kid you don’t even know how about you don’t dwell on the mistake that he made and pray for him to recover, how would you feel if it happened to you or your kid would you want people to write some of the things you do? And to all of you out there who are praying for him words cannot express how thank full we are for your prayers, may god be with you.

Also to the comments of better killing himself than someone innocent, at least he only hurt him self and good going keep it up you should be ashamed of yourselves how heartless you know what I bet you wouldn’t feel that way if you knew him or it was your family member you know what yea its good that no one else was involved but how about you get off it and just pray for him to get better and you think what he did was bad well look at what your doing and saying it sure as hell aint good.

If you know the "real story", then you would know whether speed and alcohol were a factor, but obviously you don't.

So, to tipsy speed racer I say, smooth move ex lax.

Of all my friends in high school who drank, most all of them were necessitated to drive at one point or another, ironically to not be caught drinking.

But no, really, the whole government saving us with the 21 year old limit is working wonders.

My name is Shelly Delong. I am 17 years old, and went to school with Gerrit. I really couldn't say me and Gerrit weren't friends, and that sometimes he wouldn't be mean. But that's besides the fact. I am praying for him and his family. This is a very horrible thing to happen to someone.

And for all of you people who keep posting rude things....
please GROW UP AND SHOW SOME RESPECT!!!!!!

First of all, my prayers go out to the family and the young man.
Second of all, to the close family friend. I am sorry, but there is not a valid reason in this world to have someone drive after they have been drinking. To have someone drive after they have been drinking is totally irresponsible.

If alcohol was a factor in this accident then the kids needs to be dealt with harshly. Just look at all the drunk driving cases and DEATHS this past year - this past MONTH. I was ran off the road by a drunk less than two weeks ago and I could have been KILLED. So yes, better himself than me or you, or you son, or your daughter, or mother...so on, so on...get it?
I feel for his family. I lost a very dear friend to an alcohol related accident and I know exactly how it feels. My friend was drunk, she drove "tipsy" (as she frequently did), she crashed, she (and an innocent) DIED. Did it hurt? Damn right. Do I miss her ? Every day (it has been 13 years). Did she get what she "deserves"? No. No one deserves it but yes she made her choices, knew what the consequences would be and now we all miss her for it. Stupid, wasteful, but she paid the price. And yes, still one less on the road.

Do I think that Gerrit made a wise decision, NO! Is it our "job" to judge him or his family, NO! Gerrit is going to get a second chance to do the right thing, learn from his mistake and make a difference. Everything happens for a reason! Maybe through this incident he will go on to speak to high school students about the effects of drunk driving, or maybe he will save a friend from making the same mistake. All I know is that God calls us to "love you another as you would love yourself". Maybe, just maybe you could put yourself in his shoes, or his mothers shoes, or his fathers shoes. Who of you have never made a mistake; be the first to throw the stone! That is what I thought! Gerrit, you and your family are in my prayers!

This is a tragedy and I feel for the family with my whole heart. But, the insane part of all of this is that when this young man was visited in the hospital the first words to some of his close friends were "WOW - I need a beer". Now that Gerrit has survived insurmountable odds, I think that our prayers would be best if directed towards his awakening about drinking (and driving). What happened cannot be changed - but his future can be changed with much prayer and serious tough love and intervention. Good Luck and my prayers are with you
