Cargill to idle Plainview beef processing plant
Cargill today announced that it will idle its Plainview, Texas, beef processing facility effective at the close of business, Friday, Feb.1, 2013, resulting primarily from the tight cattle supply brought about by years of drought in Texas and Southern Plains states.

The Cargill situation is going to severly impact Plainview. Plainview needs to have a "diversification moment" like Hobbs & Lea County had in the late 90's when the population of Hobbs had collapsed to 24,000 due to drops in the oil industry. Now known as the EnergyPlex, Lea County took a no-prisoners attack and attitude securing new and different types of work forces. It started with securing the state's largest prison, then Zia Park Racetrack & Casino and development has now snowballed. The EnergyPlex is now in the middle of a 10 billion dollar building boom on just new corporations. That number does not include the petroleum industry which is now also booming. Now Hobbs has 50,000 people with seven new apartment complexes under construction and four new hotels under construction (including a Hilton). Hobbs and the EnergyPlex is booming like never before. All of this because of a "diversification plan" in the late 90's. Plainview can do exactly the same thing. Get mad. Get busy. First step: secure talented people who can pull off the plan.
