What Ravi did was wrong, but he doesn't deserve jail time. Give him a few hours of community service. If he would would have done the same thing to a heterosexual couple, there would be no punishment at all. Why do the courts have a right to say that gay people need to be treated differently?

Hate crime laws should be abolished and struck from the books. If someone commits a crime, then prosecute them for the crime, but to add an extra crime or an extra harsh penalty is ridiculous. If I beat someone with a baseball bat, why is it worse if I did it because they were a member of a protected class as opposed to me just hating them in general. It basically criminalizes thought, and as much as some liberals would love to criminalize thoughts that aren't politically correct, it has no place in the justice system.

So the grand jury thinks the roommate pushed him off the bridge by claiming it's a hate crime. What a screwed up liberal world we live in.

Adam, I'm in agreement with you here. I think the hate crime legislation is divisive and basically tells some victims that they aren't as important as other victims of the same crime. The penalty for a violent crime (not necessarily this particular case) should be the harshest the law will allow, regardless of the color or orientation of the victim.

A few years ago there was an assault on a woman in Hudson, WI. Her attacker called her some ignorant slurs regarding her being a lesbian, while he attempted to rape her. That made it a hate crime and eligible for a longer sentence. Now, had he called her anything but those names while attacking her, his sentence would not have been as long. That outraged me, as the attack would be just as vile if it were on a straight woman or had he not called her a dyke while trying to rape her.

Abolish the hate crime designation, punishment should fit the crime regardless of who the victim is, and punishment for violent crimes should be as harsh as the law allows.
