Aberdeen PD: DWI, Harassment
#1 Sep 9, 2012
Hey Aberdeen PD (and other local departments),
How about taking a more aggressive stance towards people who illegally park in handicapped spots?
I recently got a temporary HC placard for a medical reason and am amazed by the number of people who actually park in these spots w/o the appropriate credentials. Or even worse, the ones that squeeze their cars into the diagonally striped buffer zones between HC spots!!! And then I have to hold my breath and squeeze into the crack that I can open my door.
In all the years I've lived in this area, I never once have seen a police office writing a ticket to a car in a handicapped spot.
Sounds like this would be a good source of income for any of the local towns, and I can't seen anyone having much sympathy for someone illegally parking in one of these spots.

.The truth about handicap parking.
I'm sorry I understand that they seem like a good idea and I don't want to appear to be insensitive, but I just don't get it.
I think it would be a great idea to have an oversized parking space so that someone who needs a wheelchair has room to maneuver it in and out of a car or van. But I really don't understand the idea that spaces need to be reserved next to a building to save someone a few steps. Sorry, I know I will get beat up over this but what appears to be a nice gesture is simply just another way for jerks to take advantage of the system.
Have you ever seen the handicap parking at Great Adventure? It is a disgrace. I don't know where these people are getting the "permits" from but there are hundreds of cars with these things hanging from the mirrors. I don't see hundreds of people in wheel chairs or crutches in the park. It's a scam.
What started as a law with noble intentions has turned into a way for unscrupulous people to have a preferred parking spot.
I have seen my low-life neighbor use her father's permit in her car at the supermarket.
What they should do is ticket everyone who abuses the handicap parking spaces and put a round decal on their bumper with a image of a wheelchair with a diagonal line going through it. Then they should have special parking spots a far away as possible from the building with signs designating the spots for handicap parking violators only. If the violators don't park in their designated spots, give them another ticket.
We could erase the national debt.

I won't beat you up over this, but you're dead wrong about the handicapped parking spots. Just because a person doesn't have crutches or a wheelchair, doesn't mean they don't have issues. People abusing the handicapped parking places really burns me up, so I'm with OB on this one. And I've made more than my fair share of phone calls to the cops when I see someone parked illegally in one of these spots.
Just so you know, you need a medical doctor's note in order to obtain one, you just can't simple ask for one.

Well, well, well, MPG, still reading but not posting on the NJO Middletown forum, cool.
What's with the arbitrary towns under our names?
Asbury Park and Rahway? Weird.
I agree that people should be ticketed for abusing the handicap parking spots.
My point is that most people who have permits don't need them. They either found a way to make them or they borrowed them or something.
I think the handicap licensce plates are legit but if you ever saw the abuse at Great adventure you would be astounded.

I'm not even mentioning the other place, I just hope the people that left there will come here. I have no idea what the locations under our names mean.

I think the town name listed has to do with the gateway where your internet service provider is based. For instance, I'm in Old Bridge, but usually Keyport appears under my name.
Also don't know how topix.com manages their forums. I read and post in the Old Bridge forum, but it shows news from other nearby towns. One of the most active discussions has to do with some house that constantly hosts underage drinking parties in Sayreville... I guess it appears in various nearby forums.
As for the HC placards, I don't know how they're managed in general, but mine is temporary (6 months only). I don't know if a permanent (or longer term) one requires a stricter process. But having too many or making them easy to get is a different question. This does not authorize people who don't have them to ignore the laws and park illegally.

One more thing. To 7vens point, I totally agree that the police should crack down on those who abuse the placard (like borrowing a relative's placard to go to the supermarket).
Those should get really steep tickets and the owner of the placard should get one too!

I am toying with the idea of inviting the people from the other forum to post here.
I don't want to attract the undesirables to this place.
Can someone tell me how this forum is moderated, if at all?
Can people be banned if they are offensive?
#9 Sep 15, 2012
I don't think it's really very moderated.
I've reported blatant offenses a few times (advertising, encouraging others to break the law, etc.) and they have been removed.
But some of the other threads on topix.com have some posters that are very offensive and disrespectful and nothing seems to happen.

That's too bad.
What does the "report abuse" link do?
I hate to think that this place would fall victim to the two guys who ruined our NJO Middletown forum.
If you want to see what can happen to a truly unmoderated forum when two like minded individuals make it their mission to drive people away, look at this:

Well, check out this thread on this forum.
This forum isn't really controlled. Note I just changed my name to "not sevens". No disrespect intended. I just wanted to show that I could have very easily claimed to be you in a post and it would not be verified. Also, I could easily pretend to be several different people and post repeatedly.
The "report abuse" link is what I've used to identify blatant posts. They are removed if illegal (like blatantly advertising a local merchant or threatening or encouraging to hurt someone). But I have seen people continue to post in a specific thread after an illegal entry was removed.
There isn't really any active moderation such as editing posts or temporarily blocking users.
Hope this helps.

I see what you mean.
I feel like we could get into a peeing contest over which forum is worse.
Let's just say that what I read was polite discussion compared to someone telling someone else to "get cancer" as was posted on our forum the other day.
If we can attract some of the civil posters from the NJO forum without the riff raff this could be an enjoyable forum.
It is already a pleasure to post without them here.

OB, you're right, the temp placcard is for 6 months, but you can renew it for another 6 months.
