Todd my question to you on this issue is would the Will County Board pay the hunters? If yes good idea if it could be done cheaper. Either way something needs to be done. The preserves are being ruined by the deer and they need to get them under control otherwise they will destroy a lot of native plants in the preserves. That makes it harder for the other animals who live there. The Joliet Topic Board had a stream about this and a majority of people just ignored the issue and obsessed about the deer being killed (not even looking at the larger problem with too many of them in the preserves). I am not big on hunting but if it solves this problem, as a conservationist I am 100% for it.

I am a hunter and would be willing to do it for free. Or even pay a license fee to do it. I butcher all my own meat and give it to friends and family. Nothing is wasted. From what I have read the sharpshooters are paid forest preserve employees slaughtering them in one weekend. Then what do they do with the rest? I guess I will find out at the first meeting. April 1st Village hall in Plainfield 5 to 8. Hope to see you there to support my cause.

A wounded deer can run.........after being shot by a hunter, crashing into a car or dying in some one's back yard. That's not good for public safety. A regulated program with INSURANCE in place in case of any accidents is more sensible than letting people hunt these deer for free. Of course any deer meat/hides/etc. can be donated to food pantry's or some charity to help the needy. here is One example: However, Denniston said the measure of success will be forest growth, not deer density. "The indicator of whether the plan is successful is when we get to the point where the forest is showing healthy regeneration," he said. The park service said it will donate the meat to the Baltimore-based Maryland Food Bank, which expressed gratitude for the gift. Johnson County will cull deer herd in Shawnee Mission park with sharpshooters and bow hunters Lexington Herald-Leader 2009-06-18 Despite pleas to save the animals, Johnson County officials will employ sharpshooters and bow hunters to solve the problem of too many deer in Shawnee Mission Park. The county park and recreation board agreed unanimously this evening with a staff recommendation to use the lethal option to reduce the park herd from approximately 200 deer per square mile in the greater park area to 50. "If the deer herd in Shawnee Mission Park is not culled or reduced as humanely as possible, Mother Nature will do so," |

JustINCase makes a very good point about liability and the need for insurance. Maybe they can come to common ground on this. There has to be some way to have volunteers help out with this while keeping the liability threat to a minimum.

This cause needs support from Will county residents who feel that spending tax dollars on culling deer are better put towards the schools. There is an issue with over population no doubt about it. But how are we as residents going to allow our elected officials fix it.
Please sign the petition and show your support today. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/hunt-the-dee... |
The tax "Issue" of local schools has ZERO - ZERO - NOTHING to do with & The forest preserve !!!!!! They are TWO Different taxing bodies. |

I am with Todd on a waiver of some sort. It looks like the latest issue Will County Forest Preserve The Citizen states the following on page 6 in their story District to Manage Deer Population, "At this meeting, members of the Board's Operations Committee supported the use of sharpshooting and public huntingas the most feasible options." So I don't think they are really that in love with sharpshooters. The article didn't say anyone was against hunters doing it. It sounds like to me Todd will get what he wants in some fashion. I am good with hunters doing it.

Deer Management Update
Posted: 2/26/2010 The Forest Preserve’s White-Tailed Deer Management Plan, a proposal to cull deer at select preserves to reduce deer overpopulation and stress on Forest Preserve flora, has been altered by actions of the District’s Board of Commissioners. At its May meeting, the Operations Committee of the Board of Commissioners voted on several key elements of the program. Separate votes approved the use of sharpshooters and a public hunting option that would permit shotguns to cull deer. However, the committee voted to remove bow hunting as a public hunting option. Staff was directed to prepare an Operational Plan describing how the District would implement sharpshooting and public hunting with shotguns and analyzing the program costs. Following review of the Operational Plan and public comments from 18 individuals at the June meeting of the Board of Commissioners, Operations Committee Chairman James Moustis, while acknowledging that the Operations Committee had voted to approve the use of shotguns as a public hunting option, made a motion to remove the shotgun public hunting option from the Deer Management Plan. A vote of the full Board of Commissioners supported the removal of this option. At the July Operations Committee meeting, Chairman Moustis announced that the Deer Management Plan, left with only sharpshooters as a proposed method of deer removal, would be tabled for two months. The committee directed staff to invite representatives from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to attend the August 12 Board of Commissioners’ meeting for the purpose of providing general information about deer management in Illinois and answering questions. Chairman Moustis indicated that any finalized plan might not be enacted in 2010. More information may be obtained by reviewing the Draft Deer Management Plan, Deer Management Information Booklet, or Deer Management Information Brochure.
