Officer DePrimo, of the NYPD, has recently been all over the web, news reports, etc. because he spotted a barefoot, homeless man being made fun off by a bunch of street people for having no shoes or socks. Officer DePrimo went into a nearby shoestore and bought the homeless man a pair of excellent boots out of his own pocket. Unknown to the officer, an Arizona woman captured the whole thing on video and what was a private selfless act of incredible altruism, compassion, and humanity was shared with the rest of the country. Shouldn't such an exceptional act be rewarded by the powers-that-be, i.e., Mayor Bloomberg of New York City and President Obama? I think so. It promotes good conduct and sets an example for everyone in the country.

This Saturday, for example, I was a bit surprised that the Albuquerque Journal BURIED a news report of Albuquerque Police Officers defusing a situation where a man was holding up a rifle hoping for "suicide-by-cop". The Officers, using a combination of humor and negotiation, got the man to put down the rifle without anyone getting hurt. I felt that should have been on Page 1A and that the Officers' actions should have been widely publicized. Instead it got placed deep in the papers where many won't see it. That's a shame and I hope it won't be repeated again when APD does something for which they ought to be commended. I'm one of their greatest critics when they do something excessive or wrong, but I also recognize they deserve and should get PRAISE when they take measures like this to preserve human life.

You're slipping today, he also bought some heavy socks to go with those boots....

Now with that out of the way I agree with you about the APD disarming the person without firing a shot.

Shame on all our news agencies and the APD leadership for not making sure this got the notice it should.

And this thread will be buried because of the content. Kudos to the officer and those that understand.

Let it be buried, the homeless man is not wearing the socks or boots as he knows he would be killed for them.

His words, not mine.

So since he is a Vet why is the Veterans department not stepping in to help him?

And not a word from President Obama. No offer of help from the Government.

Surely he is aware of this and does not pass word down to help this man.

Didn't know his wearing the shoes and socks would lead to the burial...or the altruism shown...there are people, btw, that buy shoes for some of the homeless who are fixtures along the central corridor with their carts...
